Import of French accented characters (UTF-8) is garbled

FileMaker Pro

Operating system version

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)

Description of the issue

I have some MySQL data-bases I want to use to test Filemaker Pro 11 during the free test period.

At present I am importing data via csv files from MySQL. Even though PhpMyAdmin exports the UTF-8 characters correctly and they appear correctly in the resulting OpenOffice or Excel csv file, the subsequent import into a new Filemaker Pro table gives garbled characters, despite FMP having the UTF-8 option enabled.

How can I get round this problem? It seems likely also to affect my later tests using ODBC to link to the MySQL files.

I should add that this, in continental Europe, is an extremely serious problem.
