Low res printing and PDF with External Storage Graphics

    PascalSurget

      Summary

Low res printing and PDF with External Storage Graphics

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      12.0.2.232

      Operating system version

      Mac OS X 10.7.4

      Description of the issue

When we want to print or save as pdf a layout with a hires pictures (10-16 Mbpx) into a container with external storage, the ouput is in lowres like the thumbnail into the layout.

When we made an Export Field Contents, its export the complete picture.

      Steps to reproduce the problem

      1. Insert a HiRes picture into a container with external storage onto a FileMaker Server
      2. Onto a layout sets for print, place the container field with Optimisation at on
      3. Go into preview or not and make a Print or a Save As PDF...

      Expected result

A PDF or a print with a full res picture

      Actual result

A print with picture pixelated in low res.

      Workaround

To bypass the problem, we zoom in, into browse mode, to force FileMaker Server to generate (or download ?) a new thumbnail with more resolution and after we can make a PDF or a good print.

The issue is indeed with the thumbnail. Try going to Manage | Containers and disabling thumbnails. Does that result in higher quality output?

Unfortunately, this is a rather extreme fix for the issue as it affects all container fields in your file.

It's still a pretty extreme workaround, but maybe a file with an external data reference to your table(s) could be added where thumbnails have been disabled. Then use layouts in this file for printing/saving as PDF when the layout includes a container field that you need to be at best possible resolution. Scripts can automate the switch back and forth between files and layouts.
