Is the remote server on the same local area network?
Are you able to select Open Remote and get a dialog where you see the name of the server but not the files hosted by it?
can other computers with FileMaker installed see the hosted files?
Shouldn't need to export client user name and password to the server.
I am able to select Open Remote and see server name but no files
Other computers on network can use all databases on server
Remote server is on same LAN to best of my knowledge. Will verify and revert.
Remote server is on same LAN as pc in question.
could be the 'server.pem' - problem
- the sever.pem - file is missing or corrupt
- You can copy the file from another machine
some of the statements in the links above are somehow misleading - and I couldn't find the post that describes where the .pem files are.. AFIK, on windows those files are in the FileMaker application folder and can be copied among computers
markus schneider has anticipated my next post, but I have some links that may be more informative:

Thanks PhilModJunk and Markus, I tried all of above and the thread that suggested trying to change hardware worked. I just changed PCs and bingo all good. No discernable difference between machines, just happy I had a spare. Thanks again for all the help.
