Summary

Placeholder text too wide for its containing field displays ? rather than breaking at word breaks

Product

FileMaker Pro

Version

14.0.1

Operating system version

OS X 10.10.3

Description of the issue

Described in detail at:
http://www.sumware.net/robfm3/?p=311

When the calculation result of placeholder text is too wide for the field or too tall, FileMaker 14 displays a ?, rather than breaking at a word boundary.

That is, FileMaker is treating the display like a number, rather than text.

Steps to reproduce the problem

Create a field on a layout with placeholder text that is longer than the field.

Detailed at:
http://www.sumware.net/robfm3/?p=311

Expected result

The placeholder text to be truncated at the last word boundary before the end of the containing field, just like text is normally broken.

Actual result

FileMaker displays a ? instead of any of the placeholder

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

?

Workaround

wrap the calculation in a LEFT( placeholder_calc ; x) where x is a number that should show fewer characters than will fit (difficult to calculate for non-mono-spaced fonts).
