I can vouch for this problem. I have a database which printed pictures from my iPhone. In FMPro Adv 11, the images printed very nicely on a color laser printer, but they took about 90-120 seconds to do so. In switching to FMPro Adv12, the images print very rapidly, probably in 10 seconds and the quality is very poor. Apparently the new version is sending screen resolution images to the printer, and quite frankly this is not going to work for me.
Where did you hear about the programme printing screen resolution images to the printer?
I didn't hear it anywhere. The old version printing to an HP Color Laser printer took about 1-2 minutes to send the iPhone 4s pictures over the network to the printer. Which sounds about right considering there were three 5mb photos on each page. The new version starts printing this page within 10 seconds, so obviously a much smaller amount of data is being sent to the printer, likely because FMPro has downsampled the images. The pictures that are printing are much lower resolution when viewed with the naked eye compared to the same pictures printed with FMPro Adv 11. The quality looks similar to screen resolution.
There isn't a way that I know of to check the image resolution which is being sent to the printer. I did try setting the printer output quality to 1200x600 dpi, but that made no difference whatsoever. This is clearly a change from the way that FMPro Adv 11 handled photos in containers....
Carl Prosser and Vincent Angeloni:
Thank you for your post.
Our Development and Testing departments are already aware of this issue. This poor print quality for images in Container fields occurs when Thumbnails are turned on. If you turn off Thumbnails, the printout will appear like it did in FileMaker Pro 11. To turn off Thumbnails, pull down the File menu and select "Manage -> Containers...". Click on the Thumbnails tab and uncheck the option "Generate and store thumbnails for images".
I have attached both of your post to the original report. When more information becomes available, I will let you know.
Seems like this is a setting that should be an option in the Inspector so that selected container fields can take advantage of the thumbnails option and others used for printing would not. Making this an "every container field, everywhere in the file" option severely limits its usefulness.
Presumably this also occurs in Windows systems?
The release notes for FileMaker 12.03 indicate:
Improvements made to the printing quality of image thumbnails in container fields.
For those of you that have encountered this issue, what do you think?
