Random Crashes in Mac OSX 10.6.2

    Steve Wright

      Summary

Random Crashes in Mac OSX 10.6.2

      Description of the issue

      I am having some random crashes in Filemaker on OSX 10.6.2 It doesn't appear to be anything specific I am doing which causes it, at least not that I can put my finger on yet..  This particular instance, I just changed from layout mode to browse mode, then clicked on a button which is set to run a script, it then immediately crashed.    Something  I noticed after this was, pressing the button to Re-Open filemaker (from the crash report screen) did as it should and opened filemaker, however the spinning cursor remained in a spinning state and I was unable to select any items from the open database list.  I closed FM down and re-opened it, again all was fine. I then repeated the same process and FM did not crash, but as you can see below... this has happened more than once.Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 3  + those before report.---Process: FileMaker Pro [779] Path: /Applications/FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced/FileMaker Pro Advanced.app/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro Identifier: com.filemaker.client.advanced Version: 11.0.1 (11.0.1) Code Type: X86 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [153] Date/Time: 2010-03-11 17:26:54.922 +0000 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C2234) Report Version: 6 Interval Since Last Report: 264130 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 4 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 144052 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 3 Anonymous UUID: AD9FF208-6DB6-4E10-9821-2CC94F19AABF Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000005017ef3c Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread 0 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x002ad168 CLookupDlog::AbleItems(signed char) + 1304 1 ...ilemaker.dbengine.framework 0x02a1154d Draco::DBData::operator=(Draco::DBData const&) + 77 2 ...ilemaker.fmengine.framework 0x03445b87 Draco::ScriptRuntimeBase::DoSetVariable() + 471 3 ...ilemaker.fmengine.framework 0x0344bd85 Draco::ScriptRuntimeBase::Execute() + 1845 4 ...ilemaker.fmengine.framework 0x0344c20b Draco::ScriptRuntimeBase::DoNextStep() + 379 5 ...ilemaker.fmengine.framework 0x0344c36e Draco::ScriptRuntimeBase::OnIdle() + 238 6 ...ilemaker.fmengine.framework 0x0342dd1c Draco::FMSession::OnIdle(bool) + 252 7 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x0015efb3 CFMProApp::Idle(bool) + 35 8 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x0015f17d CFMProApp::DispatchNullEvent() + 109 9 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x00515a15 -[MFAppDelegate HandleIdleNotification] + 21 10 com.apple.Foundation 0x9764a1c7 _nsnote_callback + 176 11 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90a819a9 __CFXNotificationPost + 905 12 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90a813da _CFXNotificationPostNotification + 186 13 com.apple.Foundation 0x9763f186 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotification:] + 204 14 com.apple.Foundation 0x97675678 postQueueNotifications + 397 15 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90aa6892 __CFRunLoopDoObservers + 1186 16 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90a633e2 __CFRunLoopRun + 1154 17 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90a62864 CFRunLoopRunSpecific + 452 18 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90a62691 CFRunLoopRunInMode + 97 19 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x982a1f6c RunCurrentEventLoopInMode + 392 20 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x982a1d23 ReceiveNextEventCommon + 354 21 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x982a1ba8 BlockUntilNextEventMatchingListInMode + 81 22 com.apple.AppKit 0x961caac5 _DPSNextEvent + 847 23 com.apple.AppKit 0x961ca306 -[NSApplication nextEventMatchingMask:untilDate:inMode:dequeue:] + 15624 com.apple.AppKit 0x9618c49f -[NSApplication run] + 821 25 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x0002c10d CMacApp_Main + 413 26 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x00160dd3 main + 51 27 com.filemaker.client.advanced 0x00003586 start + 54

          SWS:

          Thank you for your post.

Another forum member has reported a similar problem, so I'm wondering if this is related.  Please see:

          http://forum-en.filemaker.com/t5/Report-a-bug/FileMaker-11-crashes-on-Mac-Pro/td-p/56820

If unrelated, then please keep an eye out for possible common factors.  For example, do you notice that these crashes occur generally after changing from Layout Mode to Browse Mode?  Or, running a specific script?  Or, scripts that have a specific script step (or combination of script steps)?  Any gut feelings may also be helpful.

Since sporadic problems are frustrating to narrow down (for you and our testers), try switching to a new user account on your Mac and see if the problem persists under the new user account.  I want to remove the possibility this may be caused by a bad user account.

I have exactly the same bug on my side.

20 users fresh new install in 10.6.2 with FM Pro 11 and FM Pro Server 11

            I am using Zippscrit 2.2

All the users is configure with Open Directory

each user got their home on the server

some layout use the special font ITC avant garde standard gothic

            The Database Size is 1.05G

Detail of the config and bug:

FM Pro 9 (OS 10.5.8) with FM Pro Server 9  (OS 10.5.8) no error

FM Pro 9 (OS 10.5.8) with FM Pro Server 9 (OS 10.6.2) FileMaker Server won't install

FM Pro 9 (OS 10.5.8) with FM Pro Server 10 (OS 10.6.2) no error

FM Pro 9 (OS 10.6.2) with FM Pro Server 10 (OS 10.6.2) FileMaker Pro 9 crash when boot

FM Pro 10(OS 10.6.2) with FM Pro Server 10 (OS 10.6.2)  FileMaker Pro 10 crash when boot but solve when removing Filemaker preference with a little script with automator . Crash randomly from any action done in a layout with different user and machine. database slow to respond

FM Pro 11 (OS 10.6.2) with FM Pro Server 10 (OS 10.6.2) no more need to flush the prefence but Crash randomly from any action done in a layout with different user and machine.

FM Pro 11 (OS 10.6.2) with FM Pro Server 11 (OS 10.6.2) no more need to flush the prefence but Crash randomly from any action done in a layout with different user and machine.

for the database respond speed i just turn off the verify backup integrity for the hourly backup only. the respond speed of the database just came back as before

i have put a little sample of a crash report

Is there something i should validate or change on my configuration.

              Thank you for your post.

Does this crash only occur with the same Layout?  One of your error messages shows a possible invalid object.

Are there other errors reported from different layouts?

Just thought I would follow up on this quickly, I have only witnessed 1 crash since posting the original message and thats with a lot of heavy development going on, so personally, Im going to put this one down as 'just one of those things' perhaps my mac was feeling a little over-worked ;-)

Of course, if I can find a pattern or anything which may seem related I will let you know.

                  it occurs on different layout.

i am using in multiple situation the zippscript plugin.

do you have information that zippscript 2.2 is not more good with filemaker 10 or 11.

with filemaker 9 no problem at all...

if i need to change my program i will take me several weeks of programming to change the way of using zippscript.

are you able to tell me what is that invalid object ?

                      (O_O)

Stéphane, looking at the crash log and doing a comparison... the crashing isn't for the same reason.

I am only making a guess at the situation, but Steve's crash looks like it crashed while doing some operation such as doing a lookup after setting a variable within a startup script.

As TSGal stated, I am also guessing that it looks like a redraw issue with an active field looking at your crash log.

My suggestion is duplicate the layout and then try to eliminate the crashing by removing parts of the layout in the duplicate layout starting from whatever is selected first on the layout, or try setting it so that there is nothing selected/active when going to these layouts.

I am using OSX 10.6.3 and Filemaker 9.0.3 crashes on startup every time. I've tried the ideas in the thread - but nothing is working. Can't even start it.

                        Any suggestions?

Could you be a little more specific what you tried?  Did you try in a new user account?  Did you uninstall and reinstall?  Did you try it without any other applications running?  It would be more helpful if you let me know exactly what you tried.

I just downloaded the FileMaker Pro 9.0v3 Trial from our archives, and it installed and runs properly on my Mac OS X 10.6.3 machine.  I have sent you the URL via a private message (top of this page - right side - envelope icon just below the blue horizontal bar).  Uninstall your current version, download the version I sent you, install the new version, and let me know how this works out.

                                Thanks for the assistance.

I did as you suggested, but to no avail. The program still crashes. Here is the top part of the report that is provided after the crash.

                                  Real Batman:

I found a new machine (Mac Mini) with OS X 10.6.2.  Here are the steps I took:

I installed a box copy of FileMaker Pro 9.0v1.  I launched it, and after activation completed, I was able to get into FileMaker Pro 9.0v1.

I downloaded the 9.0v3 updater from our web site and installed it.  I launched it, the splash screen displayed 9.0v3, and I was able to begin working with it.

Next, I downloaded the 9.0v3 SSL updater from our web site and installed it.  I launched FileMaker Pro 9.0v3, and I was able to get in without a problem.

I updated from OS X 10.6.2 to OS X 10.6.3.  After everything installed and restarted, I was able to launch FileMaker Pro 9.0v3 and work with it.

If anyone else has some ideas or found a possible cause, please let me (and everyone) know.

                                    Hi Real Batman,

I was wondering if you could be so kind as to place the full crash log in separate messages (as the message only allows for a limited number of characters).  This would give more of an idea on how the crash happened as it shows the stack of what occurred before the crash.  This is true of any application that crashes on the Mac Platform.

A small example would be :http://forum-en.filemaker.com/t5/Report-a-bug/Still-Crashin-After-all-These-Tears/td-p/8711
