      Summary

Recurring kernel panics on Mac Mini running FileMaker Server (multiple times a day). Java?

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      12.0.3.327

      Operating system version

      Mac OS X 10.8.2

      Description of the issue

Mac Mini hosting FMServer automatically reboots several times a day, the crash report to send to Apple contains the line "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: java". Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have repaired permissions, run fsck, Safe Boot, etc...

      Steps to reproduce the problem

      Problem continually occurs.

I seem to have the same problem. Random Kernel panics on brand new mac-mini. Have had it happen on two different new mac minis. No other software except FIlemaker Server Advanced 12.

10.8.2, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 256 SSDGB. This was a custom machine directly from Apple.

All I have installed on the machine besides updates, is updated to OSX Server and installed FMP 12 Server, 12.0.3.327. It is running headless.

Apple Hardware tests come up clean.

               Any Ideas?

Saw you posted in the other forum as well- It's still a problem for me, and I've eliminated my external FW800 drive and all displays, and it continues-

Yes, has been going on for a couple of weeks, which is when I purchased the first mini to set up a FMP Advanced 12 Server. No rhyme or reason to it, as far as I can tell.

It has happened on two brand new mini's, that is what makes me wonder. No other software except OSX Server, and FMP Server Advanced 12. We do not have any external devices hooked up to it, only power and an ethernet cable are plugged in. Have run Apple Hardware Diagnostics several times, and comes up clean everytime.

Seems to be related to JAVA and FMPS but not really sure. This server has a very light load. We do not keep the admin tool open for long periods of time, either on the server or connected remotely to it.

I am hoping someone else can chime in with similar experiences, and maybe a solution.

                     David Patschke and Al Davis:

                     Thank you for the posts.

Are any external drives or other peripherals plugged into the computers are the time of the kernel panics? A third party keyboard, mouse, or external drive could cause a kernel panic.

When FileMaker Server 12 was installed, which version of the installer was used?

Might be worth an uninstall and reinstall, using the full installer for FileMaker Server on Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion located in KB11051:

Software Update: FileMaker Pro 12.0v2 and FileMaker Pro 12.0v2 Advanced release notes

                http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11051/

Afterwards, if kernel panics persist, then boot into safe boot, start the FileMaker Server and run the server while in safe boot to keep the operating system as basic as possible.

If kernel panics are still occurring after these troubleshooting steps, then please report back and I will submit a full report to Testing and Development.

I do not have any external devices plugged into the mac-mini. Only power and ethernet are plugged in, it is running headless.

The installer I used, is fms_12.0.1.178.dmg. For both of my machines that I have this problem with, I used that same installer.

I am downloading the 12.0.2.232a.dmg installer now, and will use that to uninstall the current server install, and then reinstall. I will restart between those steps.

Is that the path you suggested above?

                       Thanks

Thank you for the prompt reply.

That course of actions is perfect. If you want to make sure everything is removed during the install process, trash the entire FileMaker Server folder located at /library/filemaker server/ after first backing up the databases.

                         Thank you very much.

I installed on a clean 10.8.2 machine from FMS 12.0.2.232a, then upgraded to 12.0.3.327. Stock Apple kb and mouse.

I had an external FW800 connected. Thinking it might be that drive I disconnected and got a new thunderbolt drive. Unless there's some other means I need to make sure I have a continual back-up of the databases? Problem continued when that new thunderbolt drive is connected. Time of KP and reboot doesn't seem to align with any back-ups (if that matters). Problem seems unaffected by having Apple display or headless.

                             @All:

Can anyone with this issue confirm or deny the following:

                             1. All Mac Minis experiencing this issue have FileMaker Server installed to either a SSD (Solid State Drive) or the new hybrid Fusion drive?

                             2. All Mac Minis experiencing this issue have at least one other peripheral drive plugged into the computer (FW800 or Thunderbolt HD) during the time of the kernel panics?

                             Any additional information is appreciated.

                               1. For me, yes.  I am experiencing this on 3 different Mac Mini's, they all had Apple-supplied internal 256Gb SSD drives. Every Mac mini (+FMServer) that I've used with an SSD drive has had this same issue.

                               2. For me, yes. I have had either a FW800 drive or a Thunderbolt drive attached to the Mac Mini at all times during the issues.

Yes, the two machines I experienced the problem do have the Apple supplied 256SSD. All we have plugged in at time of kernel panics is ethernet and power. We have never hooked up external storage to it.

The times of the panics seemed to be completely random.

Since I reinstalled the server software, I have not had a panic yet. I'm not sure that fixed the issue or not, since the pancis seemed to be so random, and I could run for a couple of weeks without a panic.

                                 I will keep you updated.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm trying to write this one up in the known bugs list. Is a "kernal panic" a kind of crash? or is there some other obvious behavior that has you looking at a log and discovering the kernal panics?

Trying to asses the risk to a database and its data when the kernal panics occur...

We had been running for 8 days without a crash. Last night I had a another kernel panic. No one logged into the server, backups not running(filemaker backups). As mentioned before, this machine has no other software loaded on it.

I did just install the recent Java update, after restarting the server.

There does not seem to be any reasoning to the random kernel panics.

If someone want sto see the crash log, let me know.

                                     Thanks

Same problem.  Same frustration.  Found the answer.

We had constant  kernel panics "BSD process name corresponding to current thread:Java" on a Mini Server running 10.8, dual SSD  Tracked the problem down to an external Uninterruptible Power Supply that did not play well with Mountain Lion, but works on a similar machine running 10.6.8

We have been nearly two weeks without an auto restart andwere getting them 3-5 times a day.
