It is not clear from your script clipping -- is your script going to a particular before it performs its find? It seems to me it may be performing a find on a layout that is based on a related table, and is thus working on the wrong found set.
howards, you are a genius! My script was not a clipping, it was the entire script. It never occurred to me because the button on the layout to run the script was already on the correct layout. Having added the step "Go to layout..." solved everything. Many thanks!
Setting up a proper "table occurrence reference" in filemaker scripts is crucial. I've taken to adding go to layout steps to the start of most scripts even if I know that all references to the script have already navigated to the correct layout. I've learned that I just might use that script in a new context in the future and will then see the script break on me...
