Summary

Underscores do not sort correctly when sorting data

Product

FileMaker Pro

Version

13

Operating system version

Mac 10.9.4

Description of the issue

When sorting data (language English), the underscore character is ignored rather than sorting to the top as it "normally" does (e.g. in Excel, the Finder, and even FileMaker's own Manage Fields dialog).

Steps to reproduce the problem

Create a database with a single text field. Create three records in the database, entering into the text field:

A
_B
C

Then sort the three records based on that field.

Expected result

The records should sort as:

_B
A
C

Actual result

The records sort as though the underscore were not present, that is:

A
_B
C

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

None.

Configuration information

OS is configured as English, English is the default language in FileMaker as well.

Workaround

In the sort dialog, if I override the field's language to Unicode, the underscore is at least not ignored, but it sorts to the bottom rather than to the top.

If I create a calc field that returns the first field in lowercase, then sort *that* in Unicode, I get the desired result, but this workaround comes with a performance and ease-of-use hit that I'd like to avoid.
