Using advanced dictation in Yosemite causes FileMaker Pro to crash.
Thank you for your post.
I am unable to replicate the issue. This is what I have done.
1. On Mac OS X 10.10, I went into System Preferences, clicked the "Dictation & Speech" icon, turned on Dictation, and set the keyboard shortcut to "Press Right Command Key Twice".
2. I launched FileMaker Pro 13.0v3 and created a file "File.fmp12" with one text field "Name".
3. I created a new record, placed my cursor in "Name", pressed the right Command key twice, and the microphone appears.
4. I speak "TSGal" and click Done. "TS Gail" appears in the field.
5. I returned to System Preferences and selected "Use Enhanced Dictation" (I believe this is what you meant by advanced dictation). This took a couple of minutes to download.
6. When the download completed, I went back to FileMaker Pro, put my cursor in Name, pressed the right Command key twice, and the microphone appeared again. I spoke "Erwin", and after a one to two second pause, "Erwin" appeared in the field.
Please let me know what I'm doing differently than you so I can replicate the issue.
Since first posting my problem, I have found that "Enhanced Dictation" works in most fields in my FMP database. The crash occurs when I try to enter additional text into a text field that has a large amount of data. I have one field where I keep running notes of events and happenings for each of my clients. I can dictate into this field if the record is relatively new and not much text has already been added to the field. So, in your example, I too would have no problem dictating text into a newly created field. I am wondering whether you could duplicate my issue by entering a large amount of text into a text field and then trying to use Dictation. Please let me know.
As an aside, I have had a similar problem with this field with FileMaker GO as it will not display all of the text in the field as the field, in some instances, has exceeded the allowable amount of text.
As a better design, I recommend that you set up a portal with a series of records where a text field records a portion of this entire text. The resulting data should be much easier to work with than a massive "blob" of text crammed into a single field.
I have created a field with approximately 500 characters. I am still able to use Enhanced dictation.
I copied and pasted the information twice so there is now 1,500 characters in the field. I am still able to use Enhanced dictation.
In your other issue, how many lines of text are you able to view? How much text is missing?
I can't tell you how many characters are in the large fields that give me problems but I did copy and past the contents of one of the problematic filed into Pages and the word count was 19,000 plus which would probably be about 75,000 plus characters.
As to your questions, in the large fields, I can view all the lines of text (I am not sure I understand your question). Immediately when I try to use enhanced dictation, FMP crashes.
I'll have to do some further testing and find some additional text to paste.
Sorry about the confusion about the second part, as I should have mentioned your second issue with FileMaker Go. You had mentioned that you couldn't see all of the text in the field in FileMaker Go. This may be a limit in the number of characters that can be displayed in FileMaker Go. I'll get back to you on that.
As per Knowledge Base Article #7740, the maximum number of characters that can be displayed in a Text field is 65,536 characters (64K): For more specifications, see:
Thank you for your prompt response. Is there a way to determine the number of characters in a field so that I cold know which fields to modify to below the limit?
Are there plane to increase the number of characters that can be displayed in FileMaker Go?
I took your second post and pasted it into a field many times. The length of the field is 78320, which is probably comparable.
I am then able to get a crash with Enhanced Dictation active. With Enhanced Dictation turned off but with Dictation still active, I do not get a crash.
When I reduce the field size to less than 64K, then Enhanced Dictation active does not crash.
I have sent your post along with my findings to our Development and Testing departments for review. When I receive any feedback, I will let you know.
Thank you for your persistence. I will await your response.
