      Summary

      Version 12.3 Update Won't Install

      Product

      FileMaker Pro

      Version

      12

      Operating system version

      OS 10.8.2

      Description of the issue

I tried to update FM Pro to 12.3, but it won't install -- the error message is: 'the update cannot occur because you have selected a device which has not been file indexed. Enable indexing via the mdutil system utility.'

However, FM is installed on my Mac Pro HD which is indexed (Spotlight is working fine).

      Steps to reproduce the problem

      Download from the link:

'FileMaker Pro 12.0v3 and FileMaker Pro 12.0v3 Advanced Updater'

      on:

      http://www.filemaker.com/support/downloads/

      Expected result

      Update installs.

      Actual result

      Update fails to install.

Exact text of any error message(s) that appear

'the update cannot occur because you have selected a device which has not been file indexed. Enable indexing via the mdutil system utility.'

               tonyberber:

               Thank you for the post.

Is FileMaker Pro 12 Advanced installed to the Applications folder? If you try to install in a new Admin user account do you get the same results?

Some steps that may resolve this issue would be to:

               1. Re-index your entire hard drive. The instructions for doing so can be found here:

          http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

               2. Uninstall and reinstall using your original media, re-download the update, and attempt the update once more.

               3. Try any of the above in another Admin user account.

Please let me know if the following resolves the issue; otherwise, we can discuss next steps.

Thank you, TSFalcon, for your reply!

I re-indexed my HD, and the update installation worked!

To re-index, I did the following:

sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/Server\ HD/  # this erases the existing index for Server HD

sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/Server\ HD/  # and this builds a new index
