Web viewers with WebDirect and HTTPS

    Smef

      Summary

Web viewers with WebDirect and HTTPS

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      13

      Operating system version

      Browsers

      Description of the issue

Web viewers do not display any content when WebDirect is used with HTTPS connections.  Web viewers work fine when WebDirect is used with HTTP, but an HTTPS connection causes web viewers to stop loading content.

      Steps to reproduce the problem

Connect to WebDirect using HTTPS and open a database and layout with a web viewer.

      Expected result

Web viewers should load content from the URLs they are set to.

      Actual result

Web viewers remain blank and do not load any content.

      Configuration information

I've been testing this using a valid SSL certificate from Comodo.  Server is a Mac mini running 10.9.

      Workaround

Loading the same database and layout using HTTP instead of HTTPS resolves the issue, but you lose the HTTPS encryption and protection.

               Thank you for your post.

I created a WebViewer using "https://store.filemaker.com", and this displayed properly in FileMaker Pro and WebDirect.  All content was loaded, but any Javascript objects were inaccessible.  I then tried "https://www.google.com", since I know it contains 99% Javascript, and although it displays correctly in FileMaker Pro, it is blank in WebDirect.

I have sent this information to our Development and Testing departments for review.  When I receive any feedback, I will let you know.

Can you tell me more about the URL you are trying to load?  This may be helpful in narrowing down the issue.

As I read more through the notes of the issue, there is a reference to the first bullet point under "Web viewers" on page 39 of the WebDirect Guide at:

                https://fmhelp.filemaker.com/docs/13/en/fm13_webdirect_guide.pdf

"Some webpages may not load correctly because of security features implemented by the pages’ authors. Make sure to test all webpages you intend to display in the web viewer."

What content is supposed to work in web viewers in web direct?  I've tried Google.com, the default Google Maps URL that web viewers start with, SuperContainer, and other websites varying from simple HTML and CSS to complex things and haven't been able to get anything to load when webdirect is using HTTPS.  That note that "Some things may not work correctly because of security features" is fine, and makes sense as some sites aren't designed to be used in a frame like that and can have issues, but there's a big difference between "some sites may not work" and "nothing will load at all."  These pages are not failing to load due to security implemented by the pages authors as the document you're linking states. I've tested it on plain, simple HTML sites with no javascript I've made myself.

In addition, I would not expect a difference in functionality between HTTP and HTTPS when using web viewers.  If a site isn't going to allow content to load in a frame then it would behave the same in HTTP and HTTPS through web direct.

Additional comment: the post in the known bugs list says that "some javascript content may not load" and the description is that Java content may not load.  These are two different issues.

I'm unable to get ANYTHING to load in the web viewer, including direct links to images.  No HTML, no Java, no Javascript, just a .jpg file, which is pretty simple.  I can guarantee that there is no security stopping these files from being loaded in WebDirect when it is using HTTPS.  Everything works fine in HTTP.

Please let me know if you have a URL which works in a web viewer in WebDirect using HTTPS so that I can try it and see if it loads in my solution.  I'm unable to get web viewers to work at all when using HTTPS.

                             @smef,

I deliberately limit the data reported in the Known Bugs List to what TS Personnel can confirm. If TSGal is able to reproduce what you report, I will update accordingly.

The following two https: sites work for me in WebDirect:

                               https://store.filemaker.com

                               https://store.filemaker.com/US/ENG/RTL/

I went to 360Works Super Container, but that is not an https site.  This displays correctly:

                               http://www.360works.com/supercontainer/

Is there a sub-page with https?

https://www.google.com and https://maps.google.com may look "simple", but if you view the page source, it is predominantly all javascript and subscripts.

Thanks for the link.  That was very helpful.

I do know that google (and maps.google.com particular) is not a simple site, as far as code does.   The simple sites I was referring to were the sites I wrote specifically for testing, or individual jpg files I was putting in the web viewer.

The issue appears to be that HTTP content will not load in the web viewer if the site is in HTTPS.  It is unfortunate that WebDirect does not allow insecure content to be displayed on a secure page, but it's an understandable security precaution.

I only have certain sites available with my direct control that are HTTPS, and so I was testing other people's sites which use HTTPS.  Those sites all failed with HTTPS, and my test sites and resources using HTTP also failed, so it seemed like web viewers wouldn't work at all with HTTPS. I've found an individual jpg resource using HTTPS and was able to get it to load, as well as the site you linked and now some other ones as well.

It looks like resources like SuperContainer will work with WebDirect and HTTPS, but I'll need to get an SSL certificate for the SuperContainer server as the viewer will not load with insecure resources.

Thanks for sending that link, as that helped diagnose and clarify the issue.

Hello, I am late at the party, and was wondering if anything has happened so far that could help this get resolved.

There are several lots of problems with webviewers under Webdirect. Safari on Mac works fine, but all others browsers, including Safari for Windows do not. Also, i can't conclude that the problem is related to https.

For a test, you can use the url of any of the pictures on microsofts https://login.live.com/ and they display fine in webviewers on all browsers.
I tried downloading a single image and hosting it on my own simple http website, and from there it won't display in WV/WD

It would help to understand why some scenario's work and others don't, then at least we could create a workaround. For the moment I fail to see the logic.

If you are going to be using WebDirect, make sure the image is in the FileMaker Server's Databases folder.

Well, the idea however is not having that picture on the server, but showing/linking it thru a webviewer. My problem is that webviewer does not always display even simple .jpg or .png images when the filemaker client is WebDirect.

                                    Wim Claessen:

I created a Web Viewer linking to a Beatles album cover at:

                                    http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02252/beatles_PA2_2252757b.jpg

Then uploaded the file to FileMaker Server 13.0v5 on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.9.5.

I launched Safari 8.0.2 from a Mac OS X 10.10.1 machine, accessed the database file, and the Web Viewer displays the Beatles album cover.

I launched Internet Explorer 11 from a Windows 7 machine, accessed the database file, and the Web Viewer displays the Beatles album cover.

What is the URL of the JPG/PNG picture you are trying to use?  I will try it here.
