Are you sure you aren't in table view rather than list view?
Clicking a column header in table view sets up a single level sort. (A sort based on the values in one field).
To get a sort based on more than one field, you must specify that by selecting sort from the Records menu or you would have to set up a script for controlling the sort order.
Phil - I may be in table view. That's how I view all my reports. It's nice cause I can drag columns to reorder or resize them. Is there a way to turn off single level sort? I always click a header by mistake and it removes my sort fields. It KILLS me - thanks - jeff
You can turn the header sort behaviour off for any layout.
- Go to Layout Mode.
- Choose Layouts >Layout Setup…
- Go to the Views tab.
- Click Properties for Table view.
- Turn off 'Sort data when selecting column'.
Admittedly it is pretty well hidden but it is there ;)

YOU are a genius my friend. Tell your Boss I said he needs to buy you a beer. I will reimburse him via pay pal.
I wish I asked this question a long time ago. Would not have had to kick myself so much!
