Window 2008r2 server crashes after system cache overloads when running WPE and FMS

      Summary

Window 2008r2 server crashes after system cache overloads when running WPE and FMS

      Product

      FileMaker Server

      Version

      13.0v5

      Operating system version

      Windows Server 2008r2

      Description of the issue

Server experiences a general system failure after running for 2-10 days with FileMaker Server 13.0v5, WPE enabled with default FMS PHP and IIS. Web site is located outside the firewall on another server and communicating with WPE. Machine is also running Carbonite; we have seen some reports of a potential port conflict between Carbonite and WPE, but nothing we can latch onto as a clear cause.

      Steps to reproduce the problem

Configure as above and wait to see if the problem occurs. :(
      Monitor the system cache.
When failure occurs, server needs to be restarted and FMS backups restored.

      Expected result

      No crash.

      Actual result

Intermittent crashes with varied periods of normal function between. 2-10 days seems to be the range.

      Configuration information

Fairly small system drive (160GB). FMS and components run on a much larger secondary drive.

      Workaround

      None.

          Thank you for your post.

First, turn off Carbonite.  FileMaker Server should be run on its own dedicated server.  Use a FileMaker Schedule to backup the files.  Otherwise, you can run into issues with other applications interfering with FileMaker Server.

Nothing in here I did not know re: standalone server, backup with FM schedule, etc. But the IT support for this company requires cloud backup of all servers -- a perfectly reasonable thing in today's environments, and this is what they are using Carbonite for. We don't have Carbonite touching any hosted files, per FMI's recommendations. Is Carbonite expressly considered problematic, vs. other cloud backup solutions with FMS? Or are you suggesting that cloud backup of the machine, with hosted files excluded, is not recommended under any circumstances, because it might involve running another app on the server? I'm sorry, but this reply sounds more like boilerplate than a serious attempt at problem solving -- simply saying that nothing else can ever run on the FM server is not an answer to this specific problem. It's a broad policy statement at best, and one that you should have known we would already have considered.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.  Your original posting did not have enough information about what Carbonite is backing up.  Our Technical Support department constantly sees customers using a backup utility to backup the server and conflicting with FileMaker Server, so yes, my answer was pretty much "boilerplate".  As long as Carbonite is not touching the FileMaker Server directories, you should be fine.

With that said, what occurs when you temporarily turn off Carbonite?  Do you still get a "general system failure" within 10 days?  And what is being backed up by Carbonite on the server?

Please see Knowledge Base Article #12120 for the ports used by FileMaker Server.

              http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12120

Compare these ports to what Carbonite may be using.

When you do receive these "general system failure" messages, do you know if Carbonite was running at the time?  What are the last few entries in the FileMaker Server event log and access log?  This may help point me to the next path to take.

Thanks for prompt response. Carbonite is backing up pretty much everything except for the FM databases. We have not been able to shut off Carbonite for very long, due to the company policy and a certain degree of touchiness on the part of IT to do such a thing. Hence my inquiry, considering that Carbonite does use some of the common web ports used by WPE (80, 443). We are monitoring for more information; the logs have not been terribly helpful up to this point, but if this problem continues to occur, we will be taking a much closer look than we have so far. In the meantime, we would like to keep this issue open.
