    Bar Code Scanning Application

      Title

      Bar Code Scanning Application

      Post

      from press release.

      "Version 1.1 also improved the URL protocol so developers can access FileMaker scripts and script parameters for easier access to devices such as barcode scanners"

      Does anyone know of any Iphone applications that can scan a bar code and send the data to a field in Filemaker GO?   I am sure this is coming but I was not sure if any of the applications were ahead of the game.

          There is a barcode app called RedLaser that uses the camera to scan a barcode.

          It almost works the whole way for me, unfortunately they doesn't seem to allow other protocols than http so I had to do a workaround.

          This is what I did:

          1. Download RedLaser, it's free.

          2. Create att web page that can act in the middle to translate http to fmp7script. The page results in "fmp7script://192.168.0.87/Barcode_test?script%3Dinsert_barcode&param=barcode_no".

          Some explanation:

          192.168.0.87=My servers IP

          Database=Barcode_test, the name of my test DB

          %3D=escape of =, to get the = safe and sound through my converter page

          Script=insert_barcode, the name of the script in my database

          barcode_no=gets substituted by RedLaser with the actual bar code

          3. Go to http://redlaser.com/apps in Safari on iPhone and add a name and the following URL in the URL field:

          http://host/convert?url=fmp7script://192.168.0.87/Barcode_test?script%3Dinsert_barcode&param=test

          host=your web host

          convert=your home made url converter page

          url=the string that you send to your convert page to "convert".

          4. Add param in the param field.

          5. Click Build app to save an icon to your homescreen.

          When you click your icon on the homescreen RedLaser starts and you can aim it to your barcode to read it. The barcode is read and RedLaser try to open:

          fmp7script://192.168.0.87/Barcode_test?script=insert_barcode&param=test

          Because it doesn't handle fmp7script you have to manually select Open in Safari with the little arrow.

          This solution is off course not very usable but if RedLaser change to handle other protocols but http it will work better. I have send an e-mail to RedLaser regarding this.

              "While these updates are certainly welcome, the integration with third party iOS apps through the URL protocol handler is much more interesting. The first product announced that will work with this feature is CNS Barcode, which lets you include barcodes in databases."

              ABOVE WAS FROM A ARTICLE TODAY.

              DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT CNS BARCODE IS?  IS IT A IPHONE APPLICATION?

                Hello,

                Our free iPhone & Android app pic2shop implements a custom URL scheme that lets other apps use it as an external barcode scanner.

                I ran across a blog post that explains how to interface it easily with FileMaker GO: http://www.skeletonkey.com/blog/filemaker_go_barcode_scanning_with_pic2shop

                It might be what you are looking for.

                Cheers,
