When you send a file by email it is subject to whatever happens on the Internet and what happens with two email clients. And of course malware.
The file on Go is not harmed by sending an email. It's the emailed copy that is being damaged in transit.
Did you upgrade your emailer just before the damages began or install any plugin for the emailer?
Did this begin after IOS 5 was downloaded or after a Filemaker Update?
And the File should be closed before it is uploaded and emailed.
Jack, do you know the best way to do that for GO?
I'm not sure you have to close the file before emailing it. Consider that Filemaker will make a compressed copy of an open file. I would assume that is what happens and then the file is deleted. Anyway, without testing this a thousand times I would expect Filemaker Go to have been thoroughly tested for this function.
It's easy enough to close the file with a script or go into the layout view and touch the close box. How to email a closed file is something I haven't tried but seems as if if should be easy enough to script using another file. Just put the two files in the same folder and script it. Transfer that file to Go and I think it will work ok. You can even have the second file tell the first to close.
I updated some of my clients with a cloned version of my solution last week and this problem seems to be getting worse.
I forgot to mention, it has happened a few times before but the file could always be recovered. Since this problem has started happening, the recovery tool has not worked once.
What do you think I should do next?
Let's first address the issue of the file being open when you email it.
This requies a second file, let's call it the Sender for this discussionl. And the file to be emailed the Original. I am going to give a super simple answer.
The Sender file only needs one script and one line in that script: Send email with Original as an attachment.
The Original must be closed and then the Sender file and script run.
There's lots of opportunity for fancy scripting and checking, etc but quity Filemaker and then opening the Sender file is sufficient. If that seems to solve the problem we can discuss complex ideas later.
