Filemaker Go & Google earth
Looking for some help taking a kmz file saved in a container and having it open directly into Google Earth. I'd like to avoid the 6+ clicks it takes now to get it there. Any suggestions?
Here would be my suggestion:
Create a button that calls a script and does the following..
You can call google earth from filemaker using the open url - Here is the url comgoogleearth://$containerfield
I have not tested this yet.. but you might have to do an export on the file before using the open url..
Let us know...
Google will be shutting down the API in 2015.
JP could you elaborate more on the url portion. My goal is to click on the file in the container and it load directly into google earth on the ipad. I'm still struggling with the entire process.
Thanks for the help
can you attach a kmz file for me..
so I could not get the kml or kmz file to work locally but you can get it to work via a url..
take a look at my script and you will see what I mean.
Here is an example file I'm trying to load from Pro in the office and the customer can open on his ipad in the field with a one click approach either by having the google earth/maps portion directlypart of the app or if I have to also install google earth as well. I'd rather have it internally pull it up as a seperate window but I have to have the ability to utilize the onboard GPS too.
kml files seem to work but not kmz files... can you use a KML file instead? It seems like they are pretty much the same thing..
JP and Paul Bruns:
Thank you for your posts.
A KMZ file is a zipped KML file. Therefore, save as KML (unzipped).
I have to use a KMZ file because the GIS program that is exporting these maps only does it as a KMZ and it embeds a legend into the map at the same time. I appreciate any help I have received or can get on this issue. I'd rather it just opened these files and stayed in filemaker instead of going out to google earth if possible. It will keep it simpler for the user than jumping between programs.
