ODBC allows you to access the data, not the layouts. It sounds like you are attempting the reverse.
What developers with MYSQL usually do is set up FileMaker as the "front end" with layouts and scripts for what they need, but with ODBC functioning as the link to a MYSQL "back end" of data tables.
Yes, I'm using MySQL as the back end and Objective-C as the front end for the new applications that I'm developing.
But I also want to access data that is in Filemaker databases.
So can I access Filemaker data (ODBC or otherwise) without using Filemaker as the front end?
I haven't done it, but it's my understanding that this is possible.
But you posted:
The alternative is to export the filemaker data and recreate all of the forms (but with 100's of tables and forms, I don't really want to have to do that)
That's what will not be accessible via ODBC from another application--only the data.
I just meant if I can't access the filemaker data I need to replace it with something that I can access.
I'll try and figure out how to get ODBC access to the data, but the docs aren't very clear, every time I do a search it is always referring to Filemaker accessing external data, what I want is allowing external applications to access the Filemaker data.
Ok, Found it...
There is a Folder called xDBC on the install CD / download image (this contains the client driver installer)
Then in Filemaker pro use File-Sharing-ODBC/JDBC to share the open filemaker database files.
Well I thought I found the answer...
When I try to connect I get the foillowing error:Odbc ErrorOdbc errror in -[OdbcConnection connect:username:password:] at SQLConnect sql state: 28000 native error: 3061 message text: [FileMaker][FileMaker ODBC] xDBC client must be on the same computer as FileMaker ProWhat use is odbc if the client needs to be on the same computer as the server? Is it possible to connect with ODBC over the network?
Also I tried on the same computer and it still doesn't work...
Odbc ErrorOdbc errror in -[OdbcConnection setTransactionIsolation:] at SQLSetConnectAttr sql state: HYC00 native error: 0 message text: [FileMaker][FileMaker ODBC] Optional feature not implementedHas anybody been able to connect to filemaker data with odbc?Would really appreciate knowing how to do this. Thanks
Are you using Mac or windows?
mac OSX 10.6.8 and 10.9.1
The mac support for ODBC isnt great.
maybe i can use custom web publishing and acceess the data i need with xml instead.
Apparently I can't enable web publishing because The Admin console won't start...
Why is everything in Filemaker so difficult? I've never had this much trouble trying to connect to a database before...
