      Title

Filemaker Server 11 Web Server crashing

      Your post

I am running Filemaker Server in 2-machine configuration with the database server on one machine and the web server components on a second machine.

Since upgrading to FMS11 Advanced from FMS10 Advanced I am getting crashes onthe web server. Going to the IWP page I get an error saying
      "System Temporary [sic] Unavailable".

When I log onto the console of the web server I et an error dialog telling me that the fmswpc.exe process has failed. The Windows event is as follows:

      szAppName : fmswpc.exe     szAppVer : 11.0.1.86     szModName : DBEngine.dll

      szModVer : 11.0.1.652     offset : 0007d9f8

This happens about once a week and is causing me some headaches with clients that use IWP.

      My setup is as follows

Main Server: Windows 2008 R2 (Database Server)

Web Server: Windows 2003R2 (Web Server, Web Publishing Engine)

      Filemaker Server 11 Advanced v 11.0.1.95

What can I do to troubleshoot this issue?

      Thanks

      Michael

I have a similar problem with single-machine configuration (FMSA11 running on Windows Server 2003). After upgrading from v10 to 11, I found that the web publishing engine would unexpectedly stop about once a week. The FileMaker techs said I should uninstall FMSA, uninstall IIS, restart, reinstall IIS, then reinstall FMSA. I convinced our IT guys to help and did as instructed.  Now we have even worse problems. After a server (hardware reboot) web publishing generally fails and cannot be started from the Java console.  The only way to get it to work is to (under windows) restart the FileMaker Server service. Incidentally, I also have the continuing problem of external authentication failing every 3 weeks or so and locking up the server to new users.

This version is incredibly buggy, and it is particularly annoying that FileMaker tout it as an upgrade. Version 11 has a couple of minor additional features and a whole lot of bugs  some new, some old.  I sure hope an update is released soon.  Goodwill with our IT department is running very thin!

I am having this issue too, sometimes it is a few days between crashes, sometimes it is a week.

Windows 2003 Server, IIS + FMSA11, Client + IWP only, no PHP, XLST or XML.  Serving via HTTP on port 8080.

Windows Event Viewer says: Faulting application: fmswpc.exe versions 11.0.1.86, faulting module unknown, fault address 0x7000699d

            FMSA Log Viewer says:

            Publishing Engine - Error - FM Web Publishing - wpc1 Error 400

            Publishing Engine - Error - FM Web Publishing - wpc1 Error 401

            Publishing Engine - Error - FM Web Publishing - wpc1 Error 201

I *think* it occurs as a user is logging in, but cannot confirm 100%.

I have to manually hit the 'Start WebPublishing' button in FMSAdminGUI to get it going again (no command line option for fmsadmin to script it eg. 'fmsadmin START WEBSERVER' ).

Have reinstalled FMSA but not IIS at this point (and bit concerned about doing so after reading PGageler's experience!

              All:

Thank you for your posts, and I apologize for the late reply.

Since I see there are three users with nearly identical posts, I would like to see your log files; especially the crash log and the tomcat/catalina files, as these will help with any web publishing issues.

I have sent each of you a private message (top of this page - right side - envelope icon just beneath the blue horizontal bar) with instructions where to send the files.

This continues to be a problem for us, with web publishing failing every 3-4 days.

There is absolutely nothing in any of the log files, except a single entry in the Windows Event Viewer - Application Error [Category ID: (100);  Event ID: 1000; Description: Faulting application fmswpc.exe, version 11.0.1.86, faulting module unknown 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.]

Every time I need to go into the console and manually restart the WPE. This event does not seem to be associated with any other activity in or around the same time - that is, it is not associated with a back-up or any other server script, and often occurs when there appear to be no web-users.

The other problem that we have had intermittently now since taking FM's advice to uninstall and reinstall IIS and FMSA is that the WPE suddenly hogs 100% CPU and this goes on until we manually intervene and kill the application.

                This is VERY annoying!

                  Hi TSGal

Please could you be more specific about which log files you need from Filemaker?

In the Windows logs, I get the following in the Application log (see below).

                  Thanks

                  Michael

                    Thank you for your post.

When do you notice the web publishing engine is inactive?  Are clients accessing the file via Instant Web Publishing or Custom Web Publishing?  Do you have any Schedules active?  If so, do any of the schedules happen to run during the time the web publishing engine stopped?  What is the last entry in the tomcat/catalina logs?  What time did this occur?  What occurred in the event log approximately the same time?

I don't know why the Web Publishing Engine jumps to 100% CPU, and I know that doesn't help you.  Any possibility a schedule is running?  Backup?  Custom menus?  Plug-ins?Any other information you can provide may be helpful.

The tomcat/catalina log files will provide information about the web publishing engine.  The event log lists information about what events occurred with FileMaker Server.  These files can be found in the FileMaker Server folder Web Publishing and Logs folders.

If you go into Admin Console and select "Log Viewer", select all modules, you can then export each of the logs to files.

Also, within Windows, right-click My Computer and select "Manage".  Open Event Viewer under System Tools and click on Application.  Right-click Application, click the Filter tab and uncheck Information.  This will narrow down the list considerably.  Send the listed files that are FileMaker Server 11 related.

                                  I found something interesting.

On our server I narrowed the crashes down to scripts that used a custom function (FrontTabs) to store layout info immediately after a resume script & close window dialogue was performed in the calling script.

I was able to reproduce the crash everytime the script was run.  Disablling the line in the subscript that references FrontTabs() CF to set a global field resolved the problem 100% of the time.

When the server is idle I will try to create a sample file that causes the crash.

As for now, just adjusting the order of about a dozen scripts in our main database has resolved the problem (so far).
