FM 10 Client with FM Server 8

      Your post

We have FM Server 8 and FM Pro 8.  We are looking into the features of 10 Pro and wonder if we need to upgrade the Server as well to 10?  I see there are lots of new features, but I want to be sure we get all possible angles of it as well.  We have to justify our costs/benefits as we are in the state of WA and there are lots of budget constraints right now.  We have 25 licenses for client and one server.

      Any assistance would be appreciated.

          Hey Wendy Woods,

          Thanks for posting.

FileMaker 10 still uses the same format (.fp7) as FileMaker 7-9.  Because of this, you can host a FileMaker 10 created database with FileMaker Server 8 and FileMaker Pro 10 can see any of the files hosted by FileMaker Server 8 (files created in 7-9).

So, you can keep the FileMaker Server 8 application or you can upgrade to FileMaker Server 10 if you want to take advantage of the features introduced in 9 and 10.

SIDE NOTE: if you open a database that was created in a later version (example FMP 8 opening a FMP 10 database), you will not see any of the later features that were used in the solution.

          Hope this helps,

So, in order to see the features of the Server or features of the Client for 10 FMP do we need FMS 10?

              Hey Wendy Woods,

FileMaker Server won't affect what is displayed in the database.  If a solution is created in FMP 10 and uses new features, then that database will need to be opened in FMP 10 to see these particular features regardless if it is hosted on FMS 7, 8, 9, or 10.

              Hope this helps,
