      Title

      FMS11 backup problem

      Your post

I am having the exact problem described in this old thread from 2011. Is there a fix yet??

I have a scheduled backup--after it runs clients get a server error and I have to restart the computer running FMS. When I then look in Schedules, the backup schedule has been erased. The backup does run. This has been happening consistently.

               Thank you for the post.

I am not able to reproduce with my testing. I performed the following actions:

               1. Installed FileMaker Server 11 and updated to FileMaker Server 11.0v5

               2. Created four new test schedules, running each schedule successfully after creation.

               3. Stopped the server.

               4. Restarted the server.

My schedules remain after the restart. On what operating system is the FileMaker Server installed?

Am I possibly missing a step to replicate?

Some Mac OS X users have reported success with repairing the disk permissions.

                 FMS v 11.0.5.510

            I'll try repairing permissions.

Repaired permissions but same thing happened when the backup ran.

FileMaker Pro shows an error message:

Communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established. All affected windows will be closed.

FMS Admin Console shows message that Database Server is not available.

The backup did run but that scheduled action has disappeared (it was set to run daily.)

Next step would be to recreate the schedule to see if the issue is reproducible. If the issue persists after recreating the schedule, then backup your databases and uninstall and reinstall FileMaker Server 11.0v5 from the full installer located here:

Software Update: FileMaker Server 11.0v5 and FileMaker Server 11.0v5 Advanced

If the issue persists after a reinstall, post back and we can discuss further troubleshooting steps.

It is defintely reproducible--happens every time I create a backup schedule.

                       I will try reinstalling.

Check to see if Apache is running. Open a browser on the server and visit the following URL:

                    http://localhost/

Does the browser window display "It Works" like in the screenshot below?

                           Nope--page not available.

I do see the admin console start page at http://localhost:16000, though.

The database server is running. And backup seems to be OK!

I'm gald to hear the backup issue appears to be resolved.

Are you using FileMaker Server's Web Publishing? If so, Apache will need to be enabled.

Apache comes preinstalled on Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. To start your Apache web server:

                             1. Open Terminal (found in your Utilities folder which is inside your Applications folder)

                             2. Type the following command:

                        sudo apachectl start

                             3. Press ENTER and Apache will start.

                        4. To confirm Apache is running, open a browser on the server and visit the following URL:

                        http://localhost/

Does the browser window now display "It Works!" like in the previous screenshot?

                               Yes--working now.

                               Thanks for your help!

Bad news...it failed again after the scheduled backup I had set for 11pm. I scheduled it the same way as the one I had tested earlier that worked OK. In the past I haven't been able to restart the database server from the console and would need to reboot. This time I as least was able to restart the server.

Could you expand on how the schedule failed?

Did the schedule fail to complete? Did the schedule disappear after a restart?

Does this only occur when backing up a particular database? If a new test database is created and a schedule run to backup only that database, then does the same issue occur?

                                     "failure" =

1 FileMaker Pro shows an error message:

Communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established. All affected windows will be closed.

2 Users can't connect to the server

3 FMS Admin Console shows message that Database Server is not available.

                                     4 Schedule disappears

The backup did complete successfully, though. It was set for 8 databases.

I will test with a new database.

What was the result of the test with a new database file? The answer will vary depending on if the issue is file specific or occurs with any file.
