File -> Send Link
Maybe I did not clear what I was asking. I want to make an icon shortcut that I can send to clients so they can access the database on the server.
The File-> send link path only sent the client the criteria for opening the link. There was no shortcut created.
Just tried it here on Windows
Made a new shortcut and used the link from File->Send Link as the target.
Double clicked my new shortcut, and it opened filemaker and connected to the database on the server.
Sorry I thought the send...file link made the shortcut
I would like to do this (I use windows)
can someone tell me step by step how to do this.
The solution I use is to make a blank FMP doc like "Open My Cool Server Database.fp7"
Make a script in that file to open your remote database(that is a script step), set "Open My Cool Server Database.fp7" to run script upon opening the file. ALSO, add the step in the same script closes the "Open My Cool Server Database.fp7" file.
Just email this file to your people, when they double-click it, it opens the remote db.....DONE!
(plus you can add all sorts of stuff to that opening database to inform folks if the network is not responding, flashy splash screens while opening your solution, progress bars, your favorite NFL team logo....etc.....)
thanks, I shall try that , although I am still curious about the shortcut method some of the other posters were refering to.
Exapnded from what what posted earlier by others.....
In windows, Right-click-->new-->shortcut
enter the URL that your hosted file gives you with the SEND LINK option from the Filemaker--> File menu.
i.e. - fmp7://192.168.200.10/MAIN_FILE.fp7
Clicking the shortcut will launch FM and go to your Db.
thanks for that - for some reason I can't find Send Link under the File menu in Filemaker. Should this be done from Server 9?
Don't worry, I followed your example and got it to work anyway by typing in the url
manually. Works great.
I have FM10 trial installed on my PC and it seems to want to use this application rather than my usual FM9 Advanced.
Is there a setting anywhere to choose the application that runs the file?
You make the link from the client.
you have to make FM9 that default program for opening FM files.
