Thank you for the post.
When a database that uses managed containers is moved to FileMaker Server 12, the default base directory is:
Upon installation of FileMaker Server, a directory called “RC_Data_FMS” is created where the databases are stored. Uploading a database using managed containers creates base directories that are converted relative to the RC_Data_FMS folder.
The base directories for databases using managed containers being hosted on FileMaker Server are converted relative to /FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/RC_Data_FMS/.
Each database will have a full directory inside RC_Data_FMS/. But for more separation, you can create subdirectories in /FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/.
If you create subdirectories in /FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/, each one will have its own RC_Data_FMS/ for externally stored data.

Thank you for your answer. I read the FMS bulletins and overview regarding managed containers and they offer many great tips.
However, unlike FMP, I have not been able to have FMS save external container data from hosted databases outside of the FMS data folder, regardless of the syntax used in the Container management interface for the database file.
Is it possible to have FMS store container data outside the volume or directory containing the database files?
Thank you for your reply.
FileMaker Server saves external container data from hosted databases inside the FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/ folder or a sub-directory relative to that path. Moving that folder would move the external container data as well. Currently, the files will always be placed in that location.
