Moving FM7 server MAC databases to a windows FM Pro 11 server.

      Title

Moving FM7 server MAC databases to a windows FM Pro 11 server.

      Your post

I have seven databases that I've FTP'd from a Apple x 10.5 server to a windows server, and I'm having no luck trying to open with multiple version of FM Pro.  I've been able to get repair to complete on several when running FM 8.5 against the database files.  The repair reduces the file size drastically, and when trying to open none of the accounts allowed access work.  I've even removed the password from the account that works on the MAC server, re-FTP'd to my local windows workstation, run the repair, and still get access denied when attempting to open the database.

Would I be better served trying to use a MAC fileshare to pull these DB files to a windows workstation or server?  All the databases start and run fine from the MAC server.  Is there some other method of getting a local copy of these databases to the windows environment that I'm not aware of?

      Any recommendations are appreciated.

          Thanks for posting!

How exactly are you accessing this database? If you're going through File -> Open and it's a hosted file, you would get a similar message by design. The recommended way to access a hosted file would be through File -> Open remote.

Once you're in the open remote dialog, if you're on the same network, you should see the host under local hosts and selecting that should show all hosted databases. If you're not, you'll want to switch 'Local Hosts' to 'Favorite Hosts' and add a new host to access it.

The current production files I'm opening remote from the MAC server.  The FTP'd files I'm opening locally on a windows XP system with FM pro 8.5 after running a recover.  Before I run the recover, I get the file is damaged and cannot be opened.  Use Recover command to recover this file.

I have stopped all the DB's on the MAC server before making copies and FTP'ing to a windows server.  The error opening the recovered file is the account and password you entered cannot be used to access this file.  Please try again.

I apologize, it looks like I completely misunderstood you. You mentioned before that you also have FileMaker Pro 11. Would it be possible to try the recovery there? The process has been refined a bit since 8.5 so we may get some more favorable results.

I've only had success with FM Pro 8.5 and the recover.  Whe I run the FM Pro 11 recover I get the error. "the access priveleges in this file have been damaged or possibly tampered wtih.  Please contact FM technical support if the problem cannot be resolved.  Here is the recovery log from FM Pro 11.

                  Adam Courtwright:

It looks like this database may be beyond repair. Luckily, since you can still open the database on the Mac, you can still salvage your data. I think the best course of action here would be to export out all of your data and import it into a back up of the database that doesn't exhibit any of these issues. If you're unable to find one, it may just be a matter of rebuilding your database and importing the data into that.

So even though the database backs up and stops and starts fine with no errors on the MAC server it is still damaged?  I have been able to export all the records, but what about the forms and custom scripts and relationships.  Is there a way to extract this information also?

Is there a FM developer tool that might allow me to save a copy of the database?

Is there a possibility that the FTP is corrupting the security?

                      Adam Courtwright:

Corruption through the FTP process is certainly a possibility so transferring the file through a more reliable method would probably be a good step to take before you proceed with anything else.

Regarding the lack of warning on the current server, the consistency check has evolved considerably since FileMaker 7 so later versions can catch quite a few things that 7 can't. If you have a backup that passes through recovery without generating any errors, that should be safe to use. You might also want to take a look at the following knowledge base answer on corruption:

I have seen cases where file corruption is tolerated by one platform and/or version of FileMaker and yet triggers crashes or error messages on another.

FTP shouldn't damage a file if the database file is closed at the time you use FTP to download a copy. If it is open, then you could indeed get a corrupted copy.

Is there a trial version of filemaker developer available?  I have several version of FM Pro, but the developer software left with the developer that did the database work.

We do not offer a trial of FileMaker Pro Advanced. Is there any particular reason you were looking to use that version? There aren't any features in advanced that would help deal with a corruption issue like this.

I have not attempted this step listed in the article on file corruption.

) Try using the “Save as Compacted Copy”:

                              1. Open the file within FileMaker Pro Advanced or FileMaker Developer
                              2. Choose File menu > Save A Copy As > Compacted copy (smaller)
                              3. Test the file

So if I understand correctly this option should be available when opening a DB file locally.  If I open remote I would not have that option. Since I can't open the file locally, I can't execute the Save as option.
