Prevent Duplicates in External Database

Your post

I'm using an external Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 database to store form data. My goal is to prevent duplicate data entries when a form is submitted. For instance, I want to check that the last name and the date field are not duplicates before a new record is shared or stored. I'm able to add constraints to the tables in SQL Server but the error messages generated are not user friendly. Is it possible to use FileMakePro validation tools to check external databases to determine uniqueness of field entries? If yes, how do the tools work?

Thanks in advance for your help,
