If you open the script in the script editor and select "server" from the compatibility drop down in the lower left corner, you'll find that the print script step is not server compatible. You may have already known that.
As to why it's not compatible, you'd have to ask the programmers at FileMaker Inc. Off hand, I wouldn't want to print from a server scheduled script as there are too many ways for printer issues to cause problems (paper jams, out of paper, out of ink/toner...) that might be difficult to deal with from a server doing this on a schedule.
Just my opinion there.
In any case, you can automate your script by using a "robot" FileMaker file that connects to your database as a client, performs the script and then quits. You put a script in this file with two steps: Perform Script[Select the script in your hosted file that does what you want] and Exit Application (or possibly close File, depending on whether you want FileMaker to stay up or quit entirely) You set up FileOptions so that this script runs when the file is opened. And you use an Operating system based scheduler to open the file. On windows you can use windows task scheduler to "run" this robot file. I understand that Macs have a tool called "CRON" that can do this on a Mac.
I'm running into the same problem, but trying to print from an iPad connected to a FMS 12 (my printers are not AirPrint, that's why i want to print from the server, which is connected to the printers that I need). Any solution for this?
I understand this post was in 2013, and you may have already found a solution to your iPad printing problems. However if you did not there is a nice little gadget for under $200 that plugs into your network and allows you to air print to any network printer you have on the network.
Here is the link
While printing on paper can be troublesome and require human supervision, scheduled "printing" and emailing of reports in pdf format makes perfect sense in a business environment.
The limitations imposed on these functionalities may need to be re-assessed in 2016.
As far as I knew it is because the server is lacking the layout rendering engine. Since it can't render any layout it can neither print a layout nor export a layout as a PDF.
Best regards Magnus Fransson.
Ok, so is there a way to get Filemaker Server to start Filemaker pro on same computer and run a script?
