"Edit box" - remove an entry

      Hi,

In one of the Filenmaker forms, a user wants to remove an entry / complete row to an data that is displayed as an edit box (see below).

      http://webmail.tlaes.net/?_task=mail&_framed=1&_action=get&_mbox=INBOX.Drafts&_uid=4223&_part=1&_extwin=1&_mimewarning=1&_embed=1

What does this user need to do in order to delete the entry "Intercontinental"?

Many thanks in advance for your answers.

      Kind regards,
      Thomas

So, what is the actual question?

              • remove the value from the field

              • delete the entire record

              In what way?

              • scripted

              • manually

              Based on what criteria?

              • In the record where thisField = thatCondition

              • ad hoc

Of course, the literal answer to that literal question is:

              • select (go to) the record

              • press cmd/ctrl-e, or select Records -> Delete record, or select contextmenu -> Delete Record, and confirm (provided your privileges allow that action in the first place)

              • 4. Re: "Edit box" - remove an entry

The question is, how a normal user can remove the row "Intercontinental".

The user can easily add a 3rd value. That clear from the UI.

However, what action, button, or whatever has the user to press / click / etc. in order to get rid of an entry. Take again the 2nd row as an example.

Sorry, if this is a simple question. Even so, it seems not to be an intuitive from the UI.

Well, that “normal” user could either read the manual/documentation, or ask their solution's developer – if there is one – to provide that feature with, say, a button.

As to the usual methods: I listed them in my first response. As you can see, that command is just one mouse-click away (and requires a second one to issue it); you could also (at least on OS X) add an icon to the Toolbar.

                    Hi,

It is not the main record that I want to delete.

The edit box is tiny part of a larger contact form. Main table behind the form is "contact". It contains references to other lists / tables, such as organization.

Again, I don't want to delete the record of the organization.

I want to know how the user can delete the reference in the contact form - or whatever this is called in FileMaker terms. On the form, however, there is no way visible to delete the reference. One can replace the entry by another entry, but one cannot delete the entry.

                    Or is there something missing?

                    Thanks in advance

                    Kind regards,
                    Thomas

                      Hi,

Thanks for trying to help. However, be sure, if the manual / documentation would contain the information in a find-able way, then I wouldn't need to ask the question.

So the answer seems, that FileMaker by itself automatically provides an "add reference" functionality in an edit box, but it doesn't provide automatically a "remove reference" functionality. That needs to be coded by a developer, who is long time gone. Correct?

                      Kind regards,
                      Thomas

I assume you're talking about deleting a value in a popup menu.

That's quite easy: select any entry, then press the delete key.

To elaborate: it doesn't matter if that field is holding a key that references another table, or another, more “direct” attribute of that record; you're only interested in getting rid of that value, and it seems that the method for clearing that field is less obvious for a popup field.

FileMaker doesn't provide any function to add a reference; whether a field is used in such a manner is up to the developer.

As an aside: the depicted table seems to be a join table between Contacts and Organizations; a record in this table without an organization key/reference usually doesn't make sense, because having a reference to both a contact and an organization is the very reason that record exists.

                              Hi,

How do I select a row in the edit box? Clicking in the cells of the row doesn't seem to work.

                              Kind regards,

Selecting a record (which is the FileMaker term for row) is a side-effect of what you want, namely, deleting a value …

Anyway, go to Layout mode, select the field, and in the Data tab of the Inspector, make sure it allows entry in Browse mode.

                                  Got it. Thanks a lot!
