Is there a way to list out the unique values in a column in Filemaker?
Create a value list from the field.
ExecuteSQL ( "SELECT DISTINCT columnName FROM tableName" ; "" ; "¶" )
List ( table::field )
Now you have three options.
Choose the right one for your use
AFAIK "Columns" exist in filemaker only in Table View.
If you want to see only unique values you have to create a layout having a subsummary part instead of the body part.
I'm a big fan of ExecuteSQL and probably would do it like Mike did.
I know you don't have to put parenthesis around the field that Distinct is performing on, but I think it is better syntax. I would do it like:
ExecuteSQL ( "SELECT Distinct ( Account ) FROM Rolodex" ; ¶ ; ¶ )
There are times when you want to have Distinct function on multiple fields and that requires the parenthesis such as:
Distinct ( field1, field2) , field3, field 4
So I just got in the habit of always having the parenthesis around the field even if it is just one field to make Distinct. Then again, Mike's way is shorter syntax.
the way to do it in FMP alone is to make a value list of the field and then use Get Values but SELECT DISTINCT is better if you have no other need for the value list
without further input from OP, assuming he's speaking about a drop-down list with unique values is wrong. He uses list out, verb, not list, substantive.
