# Survey

Just testing a theory ...

To those who don't mind responding:

Answer each question below once for each user in your organization and add to the running totals (so every reader of this discussion doesn't have to add them all up).

1. Do you PRIMARILY use a Mac or a PC?

2. Are you right-handed or left-handed?

So, for myself, although I use a Mac and a PC, and I use my right hand more than my left, I'd answer

1. PC.

2. Right-handed.

Therefore, the current the running totals are as follows

Mac & Left-handed = 0

Mac & Right-handed = 0

PC & Left-handed = 0

PC & Right-handed = 1

Thanks.

I had hoped more developers would respond to this. It appears to be too small a sample set to draw any conclusions, in spite of the fact that even this small number of responses seems to confirm my suspicion that a greater percentage of Mac users are left-handed.

Fun, but there's increasing evidence that a lot of things we correlate with handedness, like creative versus analytical, are really just persistent myths. Until Mac puts the most-used keys on the left side of the keyboard, I won't be convinced that there's an inherent reason for lefties to gravitate there.

Along the same lines, though, I find the perceived correlation between musicianship and FM development. I'm the only non-musician in our company of 4-5 (depending on how you count), so I wonder if I'm missing a gene that would help me in FM, or make me even happier working with it. Maybe nothing to that, either, but still fun.

Mac users are, I believe, less than 10% of personal computer users. Left-handedness is also present in about 10% of the population.

Just speaking anecdotally, I get the impression that those who prefer the Mac OS (as opposed to those of us who use it, but prefer PCs) are wired a bit differently. Things that would bother Windows users don't seem to faze them, and vice versa. I've noticed this with left-handed people, too, and suspected that their might be a correlation.

As regards artistic abilities, I am a professional actor, writer, and musician (well, composer anyway) with many clients in these professions (also fine artists). I have to say it never seemed to me that I was ever dealing with an unusually high proportion of left-handed people. I found the following article interesting:

A quick search found me this: The myth of the creative-right vs analytical-left brain : debunked - Your Brain Health

I'm only commenting based on recent articles I've read, though and a recent TED talk I watched. Hardly scientific inquiry on my part, even as secondary research.

I wouldn't imagine it that difficult to show a causal relationship between creatives and Mac users, though. A lot of the aesthetics of a Mac seem to appeal to a gene or whatever that I just haven't got. Like, it's undeniably nice to look at, but what's the point? (says the Neanderthal) I would think people of an artistic bent would be drawn to the Mac.
