Sometimes when we are in a contact record we want to go to that contacts website. Is there a command to do that and actually be in a browser and at the website?
The command you want is the Open URL script step.
If you are using a Mac:
• Click on the field containing the contact's website address while holding the control key
• Select "Open …" from the context menu pop-up
I have done what you suggest - as I am using a mac - and “Open” is not an option in the menu that pops up

First - thanks for responding - I need the command one that you can do while the record is open - not during a script -
Forgot to say thanks!!!
I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, but here's what I'm thinking:
You want to be looking at a contact record in FIleMaker, and use the Command+1 (or other keystroke to go to that contact's (or company's) website.
If you have a field for the URL, then assign a keystroke as a custom menu item (you need FileMaker Pro Advanced for this) and have that keystroke mapped to a script that will open the contact website in a new browser window.
Is that what you're looking for?
Write a script and attach it to a button.
Mike's suggestion is correct; a bit more detailed, it goes like this:
Assuming you have a URL in a dedicated field, simply add a button next to the field, give it the script step “Open URL”, and in the options for the step, point at your URL field.
If you want a bit of error trapping, create a new script like:
If [ not IsEmpty ( Contacts::yourURLField ) ]
Open URL [ from Field: Contacts::yourURLField ]
and attach that script to the button. Clicking it will open the URL in your system's default browser.
Mike - I will try that - thanks for helping!!
Mike - thanks - you are the second person who suggested this - I will give it a go!
That helps even more - you all are the best!!
You are the most!! It worked and it was so easy - thank you so much.
For the record, the website address in the field must be the full format
(http://…) for the "Open…" menu item to be included in the context menu.
Glad you have the other solution working.
great answer all, above. I'll add another suggestion. Sometimes I'll add a Web Viewer for such things. Have WV point to the Field containing the URL. If I don't want to have it always display, I'll add a 'toggle' field (=1 or =0) then put this in the WV calc:
If ( toggle ; URLfield ; "" )
Then make the toggle field a checkbox (of 1) with a button that has this calc:
Set field ( toggle; not toggle ) // this turns the checkbox on and off
Just to clarify:
This won't work with Open URL:
But any of these will:
Thank you Beverly - I used the url command and it works like a charm - thanks for all the help -
