Do you have to put in some authentication to get the XML? HTTPS is different than http authentication. If there is no authentication required, you could always get the XML via "Insert from URL" script step, then write the XML out to a local file and import from that. In my experience, that has been faster for me, especially for arbitrarily large XML files.

I like the Monkey Bread Software which gives you full HTTPS posts/gets and also supports the full CURL Library. But there is always the free Base Elements plugin which does HTTPS calls with authentication too.
