Open PDF in Webdirect on Iphone 6 / IOS 9

    user16545

      Hi All

Can anyone tell me how to open a PDF in a container field on a IPhone.
I see the pdf image in the container field but can't access or open it.
On the Server Use SSL for progressive downloading is set.
I tried bot the Optimize for images and Optimize for Interactie Content setting for the Container field.
But still can't open the PDF in the container on the Iphone 6 / IOS 9.

          Thank you for your post.

I was able to view a PDF in a Container Field (set for Interactive Content) from FileMaker Server 14.0.3's WebDirect running on Windows 2008 R2 Standard with an iPad 3rd Gen and an iPod Touch, both running iOS 9. I tested with and without SSL for Progressive Downloading. I tested this with the files both Embedded and Storing Container Data Externally.

I would expect you to see problems if the file was inserted as a Reference.

You may also have issues if you are not using a Supported SSL Certificate. For more information on Support Certificates, see Knowledge Base Article #11413.

I hope this information is of use and please provide any additional information for troubleshooting.

            Hi TSPigeon,

The FMS settings are now 'Use SSL for database connections'

The Use SSL for progressive downloading is not selected.

The Servers Certifiate is from Verisign Universal Root Certification Authority.

The container field is set for Interactive content.

Reports can be downloaded from this container field in a Microsoft Edge browser.
Reports can not be downloaded in the Safari browser on the IPhone (IOS 9.1).

If you want I can give you the URL and a login account to test this yourself.

              Thank you for your response.

You mention that you cannot download from a container field on the iOS device. Does this mean you are using an "Export Field Contents" Script Step? If so, "Export Field Contents" does not work in Mobile Browsers. For more information see Export Field Contents.

If this is not accurate, could you describe what process you are using to download the "reports"?

                Hi TSPigeon,

A server based script stores a Report.pdf file in a container.

On a desktop one can rightclick that container to select export this file.

On the iPhone rightclicking is not possible.

Some people say that holding the container field for more than 1 second should have a similar effect as rightclikcing.

                That is not so.

So, I see the Report.pdf file in the container field, but have no way to open it or download it or export it.

                What should I do?

                Thanks

Exporting container data is not possible with WebDirect in Mobile Browsers. However, an Interactive Container field should allow for PDFs to be viewable in WebDirect. Are you able to see the Report.pdf in an interactive container field? If not, do you see only a PDF file icon?

I look forward to your response

                    Hi TSPigeon,

I don't know, it simply doesn't do what you say it should do.
                    Has this been tested?
Here you see the layout and Inspector, showing the container is defined as Interactive content, as you told .

                    FMI.png

And here you see the print screen of the same layout now on the IPhone 6S.
                    The pdf file is there.
But you can't get it, can't download it, nothing!

                    IMG_0914.PNG

I would consider this WebDirect on an IPhone, so I would expect I could download it from the browser.
Or is it that you are saying that we can never distribute reports to Iphones and iPads?
This can't be true, is it true?

Apologies if I was unclear. It is not possible to Export Field Contents in a Mobile Browser. Therefore, WebDirect on an iOS device would not be able to download it.

It seems to me that you may want to check out FileMaker Go 14 for the iOS devices. This would provide more features and stability. It would also allow you to Export Field Contents (download container data).

I hope this information is of use.
