    Problem saving as pdf

    RobBeach

Like another user, I am having problem with a script that worked fine in FM13, when saving to a pdf.

      FM 14.0.4, OS Win7

The PDF output contains only the page header/footer, and an outline of the Portal Fields. No other data is rendered.

This happens when there is data in the portal.

My solution at this point is to revert to FM13.

      Sigh.

          Thank you for your post.

How does the information appear in Preview?  Are you printing all records in the found set or just the current record?  If the latter, what occurs if you find the current record and display in Preview?  Save to PDF?

Any other information you can provide may be helpful in narrowing down the possible causes.

In preview - all data are in place.

Save to PDF from file menu gives same result as printing via script - no data displayed when printing single record, or found set.

Thank you for the additional information.

Please send in a copy/clone of your solution so I can determine why saving to PDF is failing.  I have sent you a private message with instructions where to send the file.

Unfortunately, the files are too large to send via e-mail. Even cloned, I have one at 16Mb, one

at 32Mb. Is there an alternative way to send them to you?

                  Thank you,

I opened the file, but without instructions, I managed to find the correct layout and determine where to add records (Contacts and TemporaryPossibleHotels tables).  I pulled down the File menu and selected Save/Send Records As...  PDF, and the PDF file is created without issue.

Let me know the exact steps to take to replicate the issue.

Using the same file your copy was cloned from, but with data, I can't even save a pdf of the

front client page - all of the background layout is there, but each and every data field comes

                        up blank. (see attachment)

Why would this behavior show only when our 'old' data is present? Where do I go from here?

You asked "Let me know the exact steps to take to replicate the issue."

With our working files, simply selecting file/save to pdf / current record results in a form void

of all data, per the sample sent a few minutes ago. This is true with saving from any layout in

                          the entire file.

Since I am unable to reproduce the issue, let's assume FileMaker Pro was not installed properly.  Therefore, uninstall and reinstall FileMaker Pro 14.0.4.  Use the full installer in case any of the previous updaters were damaged.  If this still fails, do you have access to another machine?  If so, temporarily install FileMaker Pro 14.0.4 on the second machine and try again.

Continue to keep me updated with any progress.

                              RobBeach

                              Greetings,

With a little more research on this problem, we have discovered that our current solution

prints just fine to PDF when it's opened on a Mac running OS 10.9.5.

The same solution, on a  Windows 7 machine, has no data at all to the output when selecting

file/save to PDF, or going into the preview mode and selecting the save to PDF button.

That same layout will print properly if I select file/print, and choose PDF as my printer.

Sending the output to the Adobe PDF printer driver gives me the output expected.

We have tried to save PDFs from another machine also running Windows 7, with a different

install of FM14, and have exactly the same result - no data in the output.

                              Best regards,

                              Rob

My screen shot is of Windows 7 with FileMaker Pro Advanced 14.0.4.  As you can also see from the screen shot, the PDF opened fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.  On another Windows 7 machine, I have Adobe Reader XI installed, and it also displays.  What PDF viewer is installed on the Windows 7 machines?

To make sure we perform the same test, take the clone you sent me, add one record to the Contacts table, and two related records to the TemporaryPossibleHotels table.  Go to the "NEW Hotel Inquiry PDF's" layout, and Save to PDF, using the default filename Untitled.pdf, and save it to the Desktop.  Open Untitled.pdf.

Output with the test listed below is attached to this email.

I am using Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 as my viewer. No data in output.

Please also note the 2nd file, which was generated using File/Print and selecting Adobe PDF

as the printer. Works just fine.

I have tested the file on my machine with FMProAdvanced(64) and FMPro(64).

On the other Win7 machine here we are running FMPro(64)

Next test was to install FM13 Pro Advanced on my machine. Using the same file/commands

                                  the data does print correctly.

I uninstalled every verson of FM I had here, and installed a fresh copy of

FMProAdvanced(32). Result, no data in output.

Uninstalled that, re-installed FMProAdvanced(64), and again, no data in output.

                                  Sigh.....

                                    user14732

The issue only appears to be only reproducible using the "Classic" layout when used in a layout created prior to version 13.

                                    (Though i don't have a version 9 10 11 12 installation to confirm which.)

Converting such a layout to "Minimalist" resolves the issue.

                                    However:

I have several hundred classic layouts that are used for their white backgrounds, non-coloured, non-bordered, non-padded fields (customised print layouts).  Converting them to "Minimalist" is not a viable solution, it butchers all the fields...

"Classic" is an essential layout for any serious developer.

This issue makes the use of 14.4 impossible for anything but new or very small solutions.
