You may need to script in a Page Setup step to set your page size (as a custom size if not a default for the selected printer), and you should be fine.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
If you mean a print set up, I have that and as I mentioned it produces a 8.5 x 22 PDF file. But if there is a field below 14 inches it creats 2 PDF pages, so there is no way to print it out correctly
I agree with techt. You can set it in a script if you want it to be for that layout, or for the file itself using the Page Setup command. If you set it using the Page Setup command OUTSIDE of a script, that'll be the file default. If you set it in a script, the default file Page Setup settings will remain in effect.
Note that PC's sometimes require a bit of "assistance" whereas Macs usually follow the Print Setup commands pretty well.
Thanks, but that is not what is happening for me
The script step restores the setting of the customized paper 8.5x22
As mentioned the output in PDF is 8.5x22
However data below 14 inches shows on a 2nd 8.5x22 page
Create a script for the print command and use the Page Setup script step. If you go to your layout with the Page Setup to your page size, turn on Page Margins from the View menu, you should not see a page break before 22" (minus your margins).
I stand corrected but still have a problem...
The paper size needs to be 8.5 x 25
I created that size as a custom size
But the custom size now isn't in the dialog box for printer set up.
So it seems that there is a limit to paper size in Filemaker? Or is there another trick?
When I set the size at 22 inches it showed in the dialog box... Now it is gone
When you say "shows on a 2nd page", do you mean in Preview mode, or when it prints? If you're printing from a PC, the user typically has to modify the print settings manually (once) in order for the PC to fully "recognize" the settings FM sends. Is it a PC?
I mean the PDF is 2 pages long, each 8.5 x 22
I see now I need the page to be 25" long and when I create that size it no longer shows up in the window print options
I am toying with it now
Ok, here's what I did to see if I could find any limitations. I've printed on plotters before with FMP, but it's been years. I don't have a Windows environment with your printer, so some of this may not quite carry over identically. New Layout, set layout to inches, File>Page Setup, create new custom paper size 8.5x25 (click manage if it isn't already there, then click the + to add a new size) and save. From the View menu, show Page Margins and Page Breaks, this will create a dotted horizontal line across the layout where the page will break. You'll want to make sure the margin is inside the break of the page so the page will print including th margin at 25". Create a script to print with this layout, add Print Setup and code the Custom Page size an confirm that it is at 100%. Again, I don't have your setup handy, but hopefully these steps will help.
Windows seem to limit custom sizes to max 22 inches!
Ugh, some printers will do that. Too smart for their own good. Can you lie to Windows and tell it you have a different printer, or 25", a plotter, that would allow 25"?
Windows lets me create the custom size, but it will not appear in the dialog box unless it is 22 or less. I, can cheat and create the PDF, but then I cant print it to the right printer
Could you create the 8.5x22, but in page setup, run it at 105% for example, to utilize the additional length? You'd have to resize the width as well as the percentage increase would be both directions.
It is printer's limit, since Windows has A0 size (33.11"x46.81") by default.
Have you tried using virtual printer driver like as PDF Creator?
If you have problem on printing to printer (not creating PDF), need the information of the printer to answer. (and it will be different on each printer)
