Installing the 14.0.4a patch on OS X (10.10 Yosemite) also fails for me.
It just hangs with no visible progress for at least 10 minutes. Killing the update leaves a working 14.0.4 (but not updated) FMS behind (thankfully).
All that's in the log is: "Beginning installation." ... "Easy Install" with no progress messages.

This error usually appears if you don't have read and write privileges. Are you trying to install this under a non-admin account on your server?
I would also advise contacting our Technical Support department directly as they can walk you through each step of the installation and know what path(s) to take as you encounter errors.
Installing using the system "root" account.
So I'm going to reply to this thread as I didn't see anything about similar issues with the 14.0.4b patch.
I run FMS 14 on 10.11.3 *server*. Before I went to look to upgrade to the recently-released 10.11.4 update, I thought I should apply this patch over my existing 14.0.4 FMS. It would not install -- the installer would just hang. A/V software off, all FMS services stopped, etc...
Called support. We tried a few things and ended up having to move "Server.app" out (so all OSX Server options were stopped) and then the 14.0.4b patch installed (and I had to reinstall Server.app after that.)
Just a heads-up for anybody who might be in a similar situation.
