Exported from where?
if the format is comma-separated (quoted with commas between values), then can you just IMPORT as .csv?
It looks like your text is in CSV format so just import it as a CSV into the right fields.
Otherwise to break up text there are a bunch of great text functions in Filemaker.
Leftwords, middlewords, rightwords.
Otherwise if there are no spaces and your comma is your separator then break up words by the comma by nesting position and length statements into a middle() function. There's probably some good custom functions available on the web to take the thinking out of that one too.
I'm importing from a .txt document and the fields have a comma and (" ") double quotation marks.
I am importing into an import table. It only has a pk and a text field. From there i need to break up the string of text.
How do i do that?
The best way IMHO to break a string is to substitute the breaking char with ¶ and go after the single elements with GetValue.
in your case you loop on the strings, set $temp = Substitute(currentline; ","; ¶) and set
Username = GetValue($temp; 1);
Password = GetValue($temp;2);
.... and so on.
In as situation like John Derrick Smith Jr, 31 west coast street you will correctly separate the 2 entries, while middleWords() might create some unnecessary math slowing down the whole.
Thank you very much siplus! It works very well.
I've never had to import data like this before.
Thank you everyone for you help and suggestions!
