Is there a way to trigger a warning that can be received receive when WPE goes down?
Not by setting "Notification setting" in the "Email Notifications" in the "General Settings". But I'm sure that you already noticed that.
You probably have to create a cronjob that polls "wget http://localhost/fmi-test/phptest.php?lang-en" and sends an email when that fails. On windows there is not a built in alternative for wget, but you could install it there and do the same thing with task-scheduler.
Kinda depends on how WPE fails but you can certainly use a log monitoring tool (for pay or open source) that will notify you when a log event is created to indicate a failure.
maybe I could ask some of our users to help - they prefer to do a phone call when the 'web' is not available (even during night times)
AFAIK, not from within FileMaker - but there might be tools available that check for a specific website. Menno's method will probably work as well
Hmmm. Menno, this is a bit above my pay grade but maybe I can find someone who can set this up for us.
I'll also check out log monitoring tools.
Turns out there are a bunch of site monitoring services. For $1.60 a month you can get notified of a site failure alert sent by email or text message. Can choose the ping time down to 1 minute intervals.
I am starting with Monitis.com. Had one correspondence with their tech support who actually answered with a correct and courteous reply.
