Can Filemaker create a file from "Numbers" (apple's spreadsheet)
Hi - I know if you drag and drop an Excel spreadsheet onto the FMP app icon on the dock on your mac it will create a database and lets you use the top row of the spreadsheet as the field names or the top row as actual data.
I tried the same thing just now with numbers and went through the same process - but at the end of it I got an error saying that there were no field names defined in my data source. No fields were created and no data is in my empty database file.
Perhaps someone else can tell you a way to do it - but it seems odd that FM Inc, being owned by Apple doesn't have functionality for Apple's spreadsheet programme that they have for the Microsoft programme.
What do you actually want to do? What does the spreadsheet represent?
I thought FM would play with Numbers, but I had the same problem. It doesn't make sense to take a numbers file and convert it to excel, but that's what I did, and that worked.
Thanks for your reply.
I need to print a full name on 3.625x6.625 envelopes. The names are in a Numbers file. I thought I would move the names to a
FM layout (which I did) and make a layout for printing, Now I am trying to get the printer and FM to co-operate. I need to feed the envelopes the long way and in the center of the printers feeder. I'm still trying to get the "full name" in the correct position on the hand fed envelope.
A workaround but not too cumbersome.
create a grid on your print layout, using lines and numbers, print it on an envelope, look at what's printed where you want your name to be, so you will know where the name should be placed.
MBS Plugin has a few great XL functions to write Excel files without Excel.
Numbers can import those, so you can load a template xls or xlsx file, add your numbers and give it to the user.
fileMaker doesn't play with Numbers. One needs to go via Excel. There is a feature request for this, btw.
One needs to go via Excel
means: You can use Apple Numbers with the Function Export
no big deal.
I know you have a work around, here is another, open with numbers, export as csv file. Then drop the csv file on the FM icon.
Another thought: have you tried setting up the Numbers file as an external data source?
How would that work?
Cancel the thought. It appears FM won't even recognise a .numbers file as an import source.
what is the op's problem (-:
compared with Excel, the process to create an intermediate file is annoying for Numbers user. One has to open Numbers, create an export - and then process that export in FileMaker
FileMaker cannot 'read' the format from Numbers, unless the file is saved as .csv or .xslx (File->Export To menus)
I agree that '.numbers' should be added to the import into FM options. The entire Import/Export process could use some dusting up.
