"I am running the latest version of El Capitan, which I believe is where the real problem lies."
Nope, like stars in the sky, no two are the same. So does it go with people's computers. I've heard from three separate sources that the latest version of El Capitan works fine with the FM14 platform. With every release of windows OS, Mac OS or FileMaker, at least a few people can be expected to have issues.
I'm not a computer pro, so forgive my ignorance in describing my problem(s) ... I have gone to the Applications library and deleted the following files: certifiedroot.pem, root.pem; and server.pem ... It seemed to have helped, but I don't like doing this because I don't consider this to be a solution... and I don't really know what these files do, or mean.
Those three files are certificate files that allow filemaker to authenticate and communicate with servers and hosted clients. Did you back them up before deleting? Anytime I've heard references to modifying those files as a fix, it's been to replace those files with the same files from a known good system. This has been less of an issue since FM12 came out though, but it used to be something that had to be done all the time.
Since you've now modified system files, you might want to try doing a clean uninstall and reinstall to see if that corrects things for you. I'd recommend using the latest installer, and not the 14.0v1 installer with a subsequent updater. You can contact filemaker and they will send you a new download link.
From what I've heard, a slowly loading launch center can be remedied by removing favorites that are dead links. EG if you have a favorite server listed that is an old FMS11 address, it waits until that times out and doesn't respond before proceeding. Same goes for favorite files that you have. You may just want to clear out all of your favorites and recents to see if that corrects things.
As you noted for yourself, the issue doesn't seem to happen on your MB Air, So it seems to be hardware/OS (and not filemaker) specific. I'd start by identifying what's different (OS, hardware, filemaker version) and work my way towards a known good working configuration.
Thanks for the thorough reply.
I’ve basically tried everything mentioned in your email, to no good effect.
Whenever filemaker goes out looking for a “device” (such as a printer) or a file that is hosted on a remote computer, it just takes forever.
If I’m printing to a remote computer, and the printer is eventually found, then all formatting associated with the file is lost as the file is printed.
Usually the computer comes back with a message that the printer is disconnected…
I will often get the error message that I have exceeded the number of licensed users when trying to open a file from the launch center.
Filemaker then shuts everything down.
What concerns me is that I won’t be able to restart filemaker 14 if my computer goes down, and therefore won’t be able to process transactions at all.
It takes forever to launch, and often crashes on launch for no reasons that I can ascertain.
Printing from printers attached the the local computer is not a problem, so I’ve ordered more printers.
Will my problems go away of I turn off Wi Fi and go back to ethernet cables?
I doubt it. Since you've touched the system files at this point, I would completely uninstall your copy, making sure to delete any of the old filemaker folders, find the latest installer of 14 (14.0v3?) and perform a new clean install.
I agree with Mike that a clean install may help and would be my starting point.
Wifi networks are slower than wired. If you have an older wireless router then it may contribute to the problem. You could always test wired and see if speed issue gets any better. Again, I would still do the clean install.
I copied the original .pem files, so maybe I'll just put them back into the library applications folder.
In my many and time consuming efforts to fix this (these) problems, I did do a reinstall.
It didn't fix anything.
did you just reinstall over your existing copy? Or did you actually follow the directions for a complete uninstall before a reinstall?
One of the files or another file could have gotten corrupted. It best to do a clean install and then work from there. . A clean install does not take that long to do and will most likely fix your issue. If it don't fix it then we will keep trying to figure it out.
I did not do as instructed by the link that was just sent.
THANK YOU... I didn't know I had to delete the old filemaker applications folder.
If business is slow I will reinstall later on today and see what happens.
Will do, I didn't realize I had to delete my current copy of filemaker 14.
Deleted everything that had file maker 14 in my applications folder, Deleted as per instructed in Mike Bargie's email. I also deleted the Filemaker application library folder. Downloaded a filemaker 14 trial version... entered all my codes, and now, everything seems to working GREAT!
If this keeps up I owe you guys a great big Thank You...
Glade it working for you.
And so it went well for about a week, and now its the same old sh*t all over again.
I apologize for the tone of this email, but my employee can't work on the remote computer because filemaker is slow.
I rebooted the remote machine, and its working better now, but this is no way to run a business..
My conclusion is that Filemaker 14 cannot possibly run effectively in a business environment.
Its slow, it crashes, and it has to be restarted...
I had no problems with the previous versions of filemaker..
I do appreciate the time that was taken to answer this line of correspondence, but the real issue is that Filemaker 14 came out with way to many bugs for deployment....
I am one of several users that answer other users question. Most of the FM employees has TS in front of their user name for Tech Support.
Make sure you have the newest updates installed. I agree that FM13 worked better than FM14, but most of the issue I have seen were taken care of in updates. I understand that FM a lot of turn over with employees in that last year, so that may be the reason. I know the new group at FM seem to be headed in the right direction with FM.
Usually installation support is free, you might consider calling tech support for help.
