This is called an OR search.
When you enter Find Mode (manually or scripted), you will see the New Record/Request becomes a new find request.
Enter Find mode
Set field (firstname ; "John")
Set field (firstname ; "James")
Set Field (firstname ; "Tim")
Set Field (firstname ; "Greg")
Ah, nice. Thank you very much.
Since the field name is first, do I replace "firstname" in the script with "first"?
So I can do an OR search on any field? Just replace the field name. If so, this is great.
yes, use your field name.
You can manually enter the criteria as well (although I prefer scripted).
The OR search can be tricky if you have multiple fields to search.
The blog discusses various techniques and tools for FileMaker finds. It talks about them in terms of a user doing a find manually, but all the techniques can be scripted to do the same thing a user would do.
Good article, Chris!
Thank you Beverly and Chris for the great information. I was able to test and confirm that this is exactly what I am looking for.
