Does Filemaker encrypt traffic on port 5003 between Filemaker clients and Filemaker Server? If not, is there any way to prevent traffic from being sent in the clear on 5003?
You will basically good to go after installing a supported SSL cert and enabling SSL connections in the Admin Console, however; if you are using FileMaker 12 clients there is an issue to consider, which is sort of explained here:
Security Update - FileMaker 13.0v9/FileMaker 12 | FileMaker
Essentially, you'll want to make sure that the FileMaker 12 clients are running the latest version (12.0v4 for Windows and 12.0v5 for Mac) and then you want to apply this update: FileMaker Pro 12 and FileMaker Pro 12 Advanced Security Update | FileMaker
Hope that helps!
Which version of FileMaker Server are you using?
FileMaker can encrypt traffic on port 5003 between the server and clients if you enable SSL connections on the server. In version 13 and 14 of Server this setting is found under Database Server -> Security:

Thanks for the quick response, TCFitzgerald. We are using FMS14 and a mixture of FMP 12 and FMP 14 clients. We are limiting our deployment to only client/server (fmapp) access. I guess I usually associate SSL with web applications, not the client/server part. So if I get a custom certificate from a Filemaker-approved vendor, install it correctly, and check the "Use SSL for database connections", am I good to go or do I need to do something else?
OK. Thanks for all the help, TCFitzgerald ...
