    Background data manipulation

I'm currently developing an application that uses WebDirect as it's primary user interface, and need to manipulate records "in the background" (like logging changes, etc.)

Window freezing is one potential option (but seems rather impractical assuming the script still has to load the layouts even if it's not visible to the user) and SQL functionality too limited.

Any other way I can achieve this without having to jump between layouts which is less then ideal with WebDirect?

I know I could just use custom web publishing, but if I do that then I may as well just base the whole thing on SQL anyway, saving myself the hassle of dealing with the api.
