If you have interactive containers enabled, and you can't see the content on the layout, you may need to export it temporarily to open it up. Export field contents is the script step for that.
This also varies depending on how your file is hosted, how your containers are configured, and what client you are using to access the data (EG filemaker server 14, secure container storage, filemaker go client). You haven't specified anything about your setup.
hi Mike, thanks for the reply.
it's all on one MacBook running FMP 13.
open container (unsecured).
I just want to save the time to look up the doc I the finder and open it
from there because I need to do that dozens of times a day.
Are you storing containers as a reference (link to file) instead of storing them internally in the database? If you store them internally it offers a lot more functionality than just storing a link to the document.
for now as a link but I could change that if necessary.
just don't understand why it seems to be so difficult to open a doc from
So if I change it, then what do you suggest?
thanks siplus I will have a look into that.
After some more experimenting found the solution already. It is actually
1. When you want to open the doc and the docs are stored within the
- store in the doc in a container field - NOT interactive
- to open right click and OPEN
2. When you want to open the doc and the docs are stored externally:
- do NOT make the field a container filed but just a text field
- use the OPEN URL command
Thanks for thinking with me anyway!
