Thank you for your post.
It is not possible to save a hosted file that FileMaker Go is accessing remotely. The common ways I've seen to get a copy of the database to FileMaker Go is via email (can send yourself the file for instance) or Transfer with iTunes. For information transferring files to FileMaker Go, see Knowledge Base Article #7754.
I hope this information is of use!
I would like to make a copy of the file and keep that copy on the desktop ... using timestamp to save copies of the file periodically during the day in case there is an error or crash later in the day ...
I find Dropbox to be one of the most convenient ways to get files into and out of FileMaker Go.... On your Mac or Windows desktop, just drag the file (or a copy of it) into your Dropbox folder... Then on iPhone or iPad open up the Dropbox app, and you should see the file there... Tap on it and choose to 'Open in...' and select FileMaker Go....
If you are using a Mac with a recent OS X, AirDrop is an option. No wires, no ISP email, no 3rd party applications.
Close your solution file in FM GO first.
Tap the Device [ ] button (bottom centre).
Tap the checkmark page [☑] button (top right).
Tap the file(s) to transfer.
Tap the send button.
Tap the AirDrop [ ] button
Tap the Macintosh icon.
Tap “Done” when the file transfer is complete.
I also prefer Dropbox.
And don't forget iCloud Drive. I use it all the time between FM on macOS and FM Go.
It is a pity that accessing the file on iCloud Drive doesn't let one use it as a remote (internet accessed) single user server for Filemaker via FMGo. It would be very useful if it did (wishful thinking: please note Filemaker). You don't happen to know if this is possible do you Stephen?
No it is not possible.
FMP or FMS is required to host a database.
I too wish it were useful for directly opening a file, like on an external drive.
