option for sorting value lists that are table based.
Static "Use custom values" value lists show up in the order they are entered.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I dont think that will work in this situation
I have a table with only one record. the field with in that table has the following data.
I am trying to display that as a value list in the order it is in the field. You would think that Filemaker would just have an option NOT to sort it. The list changes frequently so it is not static.
In Sort Records...select the value list, then choose Custom Order based on Value List (below Ascending and Descending).
Thanks for taking the time to reply Allen
The list is not static. As best as I understand the custom order would only apply if the list was always the same
A value list based on one field in one record will only sort alphanumerically.
You will have to find another way to manage the value list if you must have custom sort.
here is two good article on dealing with value lists.
You can 95% simulate a drop-down list with a popover and a portal showing records in creation order.
I am trying to get rid of portals as their performance in my solution is poor
well a dirty trick is to show your list vertically in a text field, put a global array over it showing repetitions in vertical so that they align correctly over your text field, with an OnObjectEnter trigger which gets the active repetition and goes to the list fetching the corresponding value with GetValue. All in a popover as well.
really dirty, but might fit your bill.
need a demo ?
Any chance you can point me to an example of that?
I have solved this issue twice but when I put it in to production on a remote sever and I just not happy with the performance.
One solution was a portal, another was a SQL call to find the records then a button bar with 30 calulations on it to show the data.
What I am really trying to do is show a list of the last 30 records entered along the side of the data so the user can easily navigate through recent entries.
Good artile, not sure if it fits my situation. It looks like it works when you are viewing all records. I need my list to show regardless of the order you are in.
In addition this is just one of 5 list I need to create each with separate sort orders.
try using a fixed portal, i.e. showing only n lines, 30 in your case, instead of a portal with a scroll bar (which might cause loading of unwanted records) in conjunction with that technique.
Thanks for your reply
I have seen that article. It still relies upon a portal. I am not happy with the performance of a portal and until yesterday with r5th patch for FM14, the portal crashed MACs
