    Problem with file sharing

      Have File Pro11. Problem with file sharing. Host is Imac. Network sharing on. Firewall off. my computer is a pc. When I open remote and click on box with host's IP address can't get it to appear on right side. It has worked in the past but now will not open

          Try temporarily disable the firewall on both computers.

           

          If it does not help, you might need to reset FileMaker Pro preferences on PC.

            Can you see the host in "local hosts", not "favorite" ?

            Do you use static IP address for Imac?

              Make sure your host Mac's energy settings are set to never sleep for both disk and screen.

               

              Consider using FMServer; p2p is notorious for problems.

                FileMaker uses Bonjour for network discovery.  It could be that Bonjour is turned off or ports are being blocked.  But you said the firewall is off.  Do you mean at the client computer or the router level or the serving computer?  For testing, I would turn all firewalls off, then turn on firewalls and port blocking after you know things are working so that you can tell if that is the problem or it is FileMaker.  Also, you might install FileMaker again... that sometimes helps and also reinstalls Bonjour. 

                 

                FYI, FM 11 isn't supported by FileMaker anymore.  I'm sure you know the obvious that it would probably be better to upgrade.  Also, what kind of computer and operating system are you on?

                            There can also be network problems.  Often when I have a problem seeing a server on my network, I'll shut all the computers down AND the switches and routers and then turn them back on as a first step in trouble shooting.  That sometimes solves problems such as maybe caching in a switch or bad IP's being handled out by DHCP, etc.  Of course you might have some bad wiring that is kind of starting to and fails sometimes and not others, so you could play with switching out ethernet.  But these are all network trouble shooting steps that are just assumed to be working by FileMaker. 

                             

                            I'm glad it's working.  Just wish you knew why it had stopped before.  Good luck!
