Do you have the $path similar to:
"file:../../Desktop/" & $filename & ".xlsx"
A case where you might end up with "$filename.xlsx" is if your path was more like:

Try setting the path and filename as a variable called $filename a script step before you try the save.
The format of the variable calculation will be something like
get(desktoppath) & (your file name goes here) & ."xlsx"

Correct. I think you need a combination of what Michael and I mentioned. So, something like this, perhaps:
Set Variable: [$filename; (whatever you do to get filename)]
Set Variable [ $path ; get(desktoppath) & $filename & ".xlsx"
So you just use $path for your path or any rendition of this that works best for you.
