can you be more specific with platform(s), and versions? where does it fail (stand alone seems to work, so on hosted server failing?) also, can you post the script (screenshot)?
Hi Xavier - I'm just trying to clarify your question, because I'm not fully clear on it.

doesn't work for me as I don't want any references to that file.Otherwise filemaker will try to find it.
What do you mean by "I don't want any references to that file. Otherwise filemaker will try to find it."
Is there a problem with the workaround suggested? Exporting a FileMaker Pro file from a container field with option to "Automatically open file" will fail to open. | File…
The workaround requires a file reference to open the file which Xavier doesn't want. You could use the open URL script step to open the file. It does not require a file reference.
Hi. I'm quite ready to acknowledge that I don't know lots of stuff - so please excuse my ignorance - but I'm still not understanding. Don't you need to specify the location of the file for open URL to open it? And isn't that a file reference?
But I don't understand Xavier's reason for not wanting a file reference "Otherwise filemaker will try to find it." I'm not sure what is meant by that.
What is wrong with simply exporting field contents to a temporary path/filename and then opening that file?
