Instead of conditional formatting, have you tried the "hide" option?
Instead of using conditional formatting, use conditional hiding, which you set in the Behaviour panel of the Data Inspector—
Conditional formatting relies upon you setting specific format values—basically text colour and fill colour—whereas conditional hiding causes the set object to disappear, regardless of its format settings.
(Note: vaughan's post came while I was writing mine, but is the same suggestion.)

I hadn't discovered the Behavior feature yet. Works very nicely.
I used to work a lot with FM up until version 10, so I guess I have to do a bit of catch up with the new features.
A new feature in FM13 if I remember rightly.
