FIlemaker can import from one table to another table in the same file. Are you doing this through a script? If yes, I'm guessing there is something else going on in your script. Does it work for if you use Import under File on the menubar?
FYI - I start filemaker - Open Remote - Host. Open remote shows fileA that I click on. FileA, opens several other files including FileB. FileB contains the file that has tableA & TableB. I am trying to update TableB with data from TableA. I Tried import script or File Import menu item. When I run either of these, I select the FileB. FileB appears because though it is on another computer, I have shared access to it. When I click Open button, a warning box says - file in use and can't be opened...if the file is shared open remote...etc.. If I try the OpenRemote button in the import box, it just lets me import script! Hope this is clear. Thanks in advance.
Warning: never try to access a hosted file with the open command. Open is for local files and Open Remote is for hosted files. Do not try to open files through file sharing.

Ok Thanks Roy
I found another way for it to work. I set up a relationship between the two tables, then used the replace field contents method rather than import. Guess that is the only way to do it with shared files?
"How can I update data of a few fields (thousands of records) of a current table using data from another table in the same file? Import doesn't seem to work as it tells me the source file is already open (obviously) ?"
Import works fine. There is no problem doing this.
As Bruce stated, import works fine if you do it properly. You are playing with fire if you continue to try opening files through file sharing.
